Okay, so I just got a 360 today and attatched it to my PC via the ethernet cable that came with it, however, when I try to connect to Live, the 360 runs a scan but always fails at the IP adress, can anyone explain why it does this and what I need to do to fix it? Thanks.

When this happened to me, this was the problem:

My modem was connected to the PC via USB. For some reason, when I plugged my ethernet cable into my modem (my PC back then didn't have an ethernet port) the modem or something interfered with the IP address. I ended up having to disconnect the modem from the PC, restart it, thne plug it into my 360 via the ethernet cable. This was the only way I could do it, and I couldn't use the internet at the same time. Now I have a new PC with an ethernet port, and a wireless router, with 5 ethernet ports, so I'm all good.

Hope this helps.

Lots of people tend to plug it straight into their PC.

BTW, when I said "I ended up having to disconnect the modem from the PC, restart it, thne plug it into my 360 via the ethernet cable." I meant restart the modem, and plug that into my 360.

Please explain how this works! I can't believe I haven't heard about this before. From the description above, I'm guessing that the PC is either wireless connected to the internet or has an extra ethernet port so that it can be plugged to both the router and the 360. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmmm, I'm not sure this is the problem as my PC does have an ethernet port, it just seems the 360 fails to recognise it automatically :S

Yeah, my modem has an ethernet port, which I used to connect to the 360, but the 360 says it 'fails' to connect whenever it reaches the part where it checks the IP adress.

Well, I tried to get my 360 to connect through my PC but couldn't do it. I ended up buying the wireless thing since I already had a wireless network. But I think getting your 360 to connect to the internet using your pc, you need to use internet connection sharing. That's about as much as I know lol. It's an option in the connection setup on your computer but the microsoft help documents didn't get me my connection.

SpartanMonk

Yes, but I'm using my friend's DSL modem. It only has one ethernet port, and I have to wait a week before I can retrieve the power adapter needed to use my 5 way ethernet hub. So right now I can only be online with one thing at a time (PC/360).

Ok, and is your modem connected via ethernet? If it is, then I'm afraid you'll have to do what I did: disconneect the modem from the PC, then restart the modem (by taking out the power lead and putting it back in) and plugging it into the 360 via the ethernet cable. Obviously, you won;t be able to use the internet on yuor PC at the same time, but that's just the way it goes, I'm afraid.

Yup, that's what I had to do. :(. Until I got a wireless router. :)

You can plug your 360 into your computer and get online that way but you have to set your computer up as a gateway.

the gold time doesnt start until you enter your redemption code on XBL.

about XBL set-up- I just plug my ethernet wire directly into the cable modem. I still need to get a router for multiple ethernet wire connects. Im not wireless...last time I tried to set up wifi, it was a disaster.
