i heared that microsoft repairs them for free if it has the rrod .
the reason why im asking is because somebody i know is selling their 360 that has the rrod for 100. it comes with 2 wireless controller, 2 games , all the wires and the 20gb hardrive

No, all you need is the 360 serial number(bottom of the machine) then they send you a prepaid box, you send it in, they'll send you a new console. Go for it great deal! :)
When I sent in my 360 I also had to give more information than my serial number. My console was registered to me, so they needed my information as well.
Who are you going to buy the console from? If it is someone you can trust who knows they can get it repaired for free and just doesn't want it anymore, than go for it, as you can get the information that you may be required to file from them. Otherwise, you may be taking a $100 risk that just isn't worth it.
1. It would need the warranty seal intact, otherwise it's void.
2. If it's been registered already, you might have trouble claiming a fix.
3. You'll get a refurbished console back, not a new one, as someone claimed above.
