I've been looking at getting Eternal Sonata. In terms of RPG experience, I'm more heavily acquainted with the classics- top-down Final Fantasy games, all the Zeldas, my personal favorite Chrono Trigger, etc. So quite honestly I don't know if there are much better ones out there (don't mention FF, I know its good but its not what I'm looking for right now). Is it worth getting Eternal Sonata? Or would you recommend something else over it? Important note- A big turn-off for me is when constant slow-paced turn-based combat bogs the game, so please take that into account. It's one of the things I love about Chrono- how the combat retains depth while keeping the game fluid.

I personally kinda hated eternal sonata although many liked it. I found it pretty boring and couldn't even bring myself to finish it.  The combat is aRPG type like the tales games if you've ever played them. Other than that theres not much more to say the combat starts off really simple like too simple because you just run around and spam basic attacks although as you progress through the chapters some extra features are added to the combat to give it more depth. The story was pretty non interesting. I guess if you're into classical music then you'll get a kick out of the game as teh amin characters are named after music terms like allegretto and what not +  story has a a lot to do with dying / dreaming composer if i remember correctly so there's classical music playing throughout the game.

the combat is great... when you get further into the game you have to consider whether the character is in light or shade as attacks and powers differ in each, some enemies are tougher in the shade so need to be dragged into the light to weaken them... adds a whole different element to the battle.

Zelda is not an RPG :)

Anyways, yes, the game is awesome. I have played about 5 JRPGs this gen, but I have only finished one - Eternal Sonata. The game is awesome: absolutely beautiful, great music, entertaining story, and I never felt as if I had to grind to progress. I loved it and I have been thinking of replaying it.

Alright thanks. And yeah, I know, Zelda's not really an RPG, but hey! Love the games, so I had to mention.

I love JRPGs, but I couldn't bring myself to get far in Eternal Sonata. The combat was what ruined it for me, because I loved the story, the artwork and the music, but just couldn't get into the combat. I think if you enjoy the combat enough, the rest of the game is top notch.

I thought Eternal Sonata was very good. The combat definitely opens up the further you progress into the game.

I hated Eternal Sonatta. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone...well, unless they were looking for a crap JRPG, of course. Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey and Penny Arcade's Adventures on the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness Episodes 1&2 (XBLA) are all better choices IMO.
