sitting down flat is how I keep mine, and don't worry to much about it people on this board make you think that if you make one mistake with it it will break down but that is not the case as long as you don't treat it badly

man i really really wanted to keep mine standing up, because thats the big thing about it and every thing, but ill tell ya man every game store and ne 1 that knows ne thing bout it will tell u to lay it down, i kept it up till last week when i bought a game from Gamestop brought it home played 2 hours and acidently hit my 360 with my foot, it dident fall but my game was instantly scratched and i had to return it next day Q.Q so if u dont mind scratching disks stand up, if u dont care about looks flat, and btw the togle switch for the control light dosent work too well standing up either. hope that helps.

I kept my Elite flat for its entire short life. Since it died so abruptly Im standing it up at the advice of M$ this time around. Nothing is going to get close enough to it to knock it down. But no matter what, we all have to accept no matter what we do to prevent the death of our precious gaming machines it will happen. Thanks M$ for your awesome piece of crap.

Vertically gives it better airflow. Flat is obviously more stable.

I keep mine vertical. It is out of the way, so it shouldn't get knocked over. If I ever throw a party I'll probably lay it down, or better yet just put it away in my closet or something.

Flat... if it tips, the game inside is destroyed, also the air vents are on the bottom, and the HDD on the top, so you cut off airflow when vertical.

Flat, less prone to falling over. And apparently it has a higher chance of scratching the disk if it's standing tall.

one person has said it gets better airflow vertically, and one said when it's vertical it reduces air flow.. which is true?

Mine has been vertical since launch. As long as it's left alone it's fine, and mine never gets moved. I don't see how people knock their's over all the time.

I keep mine stood up, it is next to the TV on a stand, so no chance of me knocking it over :) apparantly stood up gives better airflow also, this is why i keep it up, not sure if this is true or not though o.O

It doesn't really matter that much, as long as you don't bump into it. the airflow is fine either way. there is a better chance for the disk to get scratched while vertical but i guess thats because you could tip it over.

This is how I think about what is the easiest way to put a disc in the 360? If the 360 is horizontal. Why even waste time putting it vertical it is just a hassle.

I keep mine standing up. It's not positioned somewhere where it will ever be knocked over though, so it's safe and well ventilated where it is.

I've stood mine up vertically twice. I guess I was drunk or something. Both times, it got tipped over, and scratched the f*** out of the disc that was in there. Set the box down, like any normal person would.Palantas

I got mine at launch and kept it flat cause it seemed the logical thing to do. But what ended up happening was whenever the disc would slow down it would come to a grinding hault. Eventually I turned it on it's side, and that helped that not happen. Eventually my 360 had some other problems such as the tray not opening and what not, but I don't think that had anything to do with which way I positioned it. I got it fixed, and have kept it vertical, and haven't had any problems since.

i don't think have it standing or siting makes a difference beside i think the CD can get ruind if you stand it up so i put mine on its side.

Are you fkcing retarded? the air flow is on the sides back and bottom so it doesnt matter, but the bigger vents are on the side so vert has a better air flow just by a bit tho.

keep in mind 80% or more of these people live in houses.. so they keep it flat because your allways walking by your 360 n sh!t.. if u got a desk or some sh!t to lay your 360 vert do it but make sure there is no way u can tip it over.. im in an apartment and i have a desk with a laptop//hd tv on top so i put the 360 where the pc would go on the bottom shelf.

ive been wondering the same thing, ive had my horizontal since ive gotten it, and it was fine for almost 3 years but i did finally get the RRoD (only had like 3 months left on the warranty) and now im trying to decide but currently its still sitting down. my reasons were look at the all of the vents, the 2 vents on the ends of the system (or the sides) are the biggest, while the other 4 are smaller (2 on the top 2 on the bottom(if you look at it while its sitting)), 1 of the 2 biggest vents is coverd mostly by the hard drive so why put the other vent flat on the ground blocking it? another thing to consider is if a game comes loose in the 360 while its sitting down you have a CHANCE of your game still working, but if a game comes loose in a vertical 360 chances are the disc is ruined and you have a CHANCE of the disc ruining somthing within the system. ive heard a handful(and only a handful) of people say that standing the system up gives it better airflow but unless the things that are overheating are on the bottom of the 360 i think the biggest vent would give it better air flow. plus if you look at the vents in both positions when the system is sitting down the 2 vents on the bottom arnt COMPLETLY blocked because the system archs towards the middle, where as if you stand it up the side vent(the biggest vent) is almost completly flat on the ground which would block it more then the 2 vents i just described.

Seriously where do you people who are afraid their thing could get knocked over keep your console.

You just let it lay out in the middle of the floor or something?

I recently changed from standing to flat - it just seems more stable that way. Also, there is a giant air vent on the 'foot' of the box which is blocked when it's vertical.

I have my sitting up right just because it fit better like that, with my wii and such having to go next to it- its pretty stable. My bro has his first gen 360 sitting down flat. Think its just a general preference of how much space you have.

On an unrelated note, what's with these literally year-old threads being bumped? Where do you find these?

really depends on where your keeping your 360. If you have a small room where its easy to knock over the 360, then obviously keeping it flat would be best. But if you use like completely wireless controllers and stuff. Then keeping the 360 vertical next to the TV or something will help save some space, not to mention the increased surface area is good for air flow.

I've never played with my 360 standing. I've heard too many horrific stories of people's disks getting completely scratched when their 360 tips over. So why take the risk when you can just play it fine while it's resting flat?

look through the 360 forums, youll find a million of these exact same post. do whatever, the 360 was made for both ways
