Should I play through Gears Of War before Gears Of War 2?

Alright, I'm going to be buying one of these next weekend, should I buy & play GOW before GOW2?

get Gears Of War 1 first so you understand the story and will enjoy Gears Of War 2

It might be wise to play Gears of War first. You could easily catch up on the story playing Gears of War 2, but you might miss out on the story. I would definitely play both games, because it gives you the full story. Gears of War is pretty affordable now, so you could get it, and then get Gears of War 2 a week or two later.

For plot reasons only, I wouldn't say it's necessary to actually buy them both though. 2 is a better game in my opinion, but not by a big margin.

It's not necessary to follow the story. Gears didn't have much story, so everything will be clear after about an hour in Gears 2. However, Gears is still a great game even today. It's action packed and you will regret never playing it. Also, Gears 2 has these little references to the first game that are pretty cool and funny. You will miss out on all of this just wondering why someone put so much emphasis on a certain word or sentence. While if you did play the first, you'd probably laugh, or at least appreciate the reference. Plus, it's cheap as hell. I think you can get it in stores for about 20 bucks. Gears 2 is still 60 as far as I know.Zevvion

Ideally, yes, but I wouldn't say it overly matters. I played GOW2 first and I still enjoyed them both.

I have only played 2 and I haven't gone thru withdrawal.

simple logic would say play 1 before 2, since u know1 comes before 2.

There both good, they both play different.. If your playing Online then its just preference on which you will like more.

Coming from a guy who played Gears 2 first, consider this.

Gears 2 picks up not too long after Gears 1, and you essentially just learn the names of all the characters, blow some stuff up, go through some vauge cut scenes, and there you go. That's it.

In Gears 1, there's so little story to it that it's almost non-existant. I didn't learn anything to add on from what I knew in Gears 2, and not just because I played Gears 2 first, but because of it's lacking story all round.

Gears of War is basically a Michael Bay movie. Lacking in story, but filled with action.

Gears is a good game and inexpensive at this point. I recommend Gears 1.

If you plan on getting both get the first one first. It doesn't really matter though
