If you want to play the previous then you'll want to rent DMC2. DMC3 is a prequel to DMC1. Im not even sure if 4 follows the same storyline so yea, you might not even have to.
nooo 4 has a new story is not like a sequel .. but if you want to learn like the story of the dmc universe try wikipedia i think it is there and to the guy who said to rent 2 .. he's wrong the developers had said it is

I don't mean for the story, I mean to learn the gameplay. Also, I want to know if it is good, because if it is, I'll rent it anyway. Is it really as hard as they say in the GS review.

if u got a ps2 u should get 1 and 3. 3 was my favorite cuz u could be the evil bro ( i dont remember his name but he was sick) n 1 is the original and also good so its worth the five bucks it cost me.
3 is the best choice since it has the best storyline and you'll learn almost everything about the story... if you only play dmc1 and not 3...you'll get confused
Just played the DMC4 demo. The boss fight was difficult, and I died, but I almost killed him and could most likely do so on another try. Is DMC3 a lot harder than this?

if its for story then no. DMC3 is a prequel to DMC1, but you should BUY them for the gameplay. DMC4 is like a new start for the plot, also dont go near DMC2 it sucks.
