In my opinion I would love to see MS try their hand at the portable market.

It is a good time to do it with their sales being top of the food chain world wide.

What do you guys think? Would you give MS a shot and purchase a portable system if they developed one?

Personally, I wouldn't be too keen in a Microsoft portable console. No sure why, but I don't think it would be able to contest with the other portable products on the market. Maybe I'm wrong, and they'll come out with some sort of product that will absolutely destroy competition, but I doubt it.

Not many of Microsoft's IPs would translate well to the handheld market in my opinion. Further, there has been exactly one successful non-Nintendo handheld system ever, and even that was practically abandoned in the West after three years (PSP). Vita's performance against 3DS I think would be a good indicator of how Microsoft would do.

No, unless it had a ton of exclusives but I highly doubt that would happen.

No. Core gaming and portable gaming are not compatible. Just look at the vita. When someone wants to play on a handheld, they want simple graphics, pick up and play, and accessibility. Which is not where MS has any strength.

I dislike mobile gaming, so my personal opinion is no. I also think they would have a difficult time contending with Nintendo and Sony.

That would not be the smartest thing for Microsoft to do.

I would say that MS is already spreading themselves too thin with the Kinect and Smartglass stuff. If they included a dedicated portable gaming device I think we could kiss the gaming division of MS goodbye.

It might be something that stays afloat for a while, but I doubt it would be successful over any extended period of time.

I don't think it's viable. Sony says it all...ios and android seem to be the wave to be ridden. For the most part, and I don't mean entirely, the hand held market is too small. Now, if something small, portable, as powerful as the Vita and a phone could be created then I'd spend some money :D Maybe MS should do something like that? Arg it's frustrating that the handheld market is so flarged.

I hope not, mostly because it would leach talent and $$$ from the main console and I don't give a flying **** about portable consoles

if they do do anything, it'll probably be something to with the windows 8 phones/tablets and not a dedicated console.

Microsoft should continue to do what they've done, stay far away from the portable world.

Portable console are heavily supported by the Japanese market. With MS's relationship with Japanese developers, that aren't mega publisher, this would probably be a huge disaster.

Should the enter the handheld arena? No, they'd be crushed. If they did enter the handheld fight, they'd need to be able to import your gamer profile and have a stable 3/4G connection at no extra cost(above the standard gold account fee which would pay for online on both the home and the handheld consoles). And for you folks that keep saying "windowsphonewindowsphone," mobile gaming =/= handheld gaming.

Yes, Mobile gaming is ahead of handheld gaming.

Handheld gaming is dead and shrinking while mobile games are growing.

That makes as much sense as saying "PC gaming is dead and shrinking while flash games are growing."

Microsoft needs to focus on making games, if they stay the way they are, they won't last very long.

The traditional (Nintendo, Sony) handheld gaming market is dying. I wouldn't go anywhere near that space if I was Microsoft. Let Windows Phone, Windows 8, and apps do the job.

It's becoming more and more apparent that handheld gaming devices cannot compete with smart phones. I think Microsoft knows better than to enter the handheld market.

Nonsense. Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja will never displace real gaming experiences like Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear: Snake Eater 3D.

I think they would do a great job. Microsoft has always done well at supporting and making sure their hardware sells and gets third party support. The only down fall is I believe that is a dead format. Apple and Android have taken that market. Not a lot of people want to carry another bulky device besides their phone. The Vita is doing poorly, I called that when it was announced Since Sony cant support their peripherals. They're a sloppy disorganized company.

So yea, as much as I'd love it and would buy one since i work on the road, I dont think they'll do it.

It wouldn't be a wise to decision to enter the portable market right now; most people are playing portable games on their smart phones and tablets now days. There would be very little interest...

NO. M$ needs to stay out of the mobile phone market too. the Windows7 phone is an epic fail. the 3DS and Vita are both struggling and might possibly be the last 2 handhelds you'll see from Nintendo and Sony. I like the 3DS and Vita, but the great games are just too few and too expensive to compete with games on mobile phones nowadays.
