Should this be happening already?

I got my 360 elite half a year ago and the machine itself has been fine but recently (about 15 minutes ago) the controllers went funny. For some reason they just would switch on and whats worse is that they are both fully charged (I'm 100% sure about that). But when I plug them into the 360 using the play and charge kit they work fine but 2 seconds after you unplug them they die. I think this might be because of the rechargable battries finnaly being so used they can't be charged anymore but I can't be sure. can anybody help?

Stuff happens to peoples' systems at any time. It's a random thing.
