Why does it seem that a majority of games use the played out "collect x amount of y" achievements? I popped in Crackdown today and thought about looking for my agility orbs, found one and found out I have 497 of 500. Collecting 500 orbs is insane. Plus now I need 100 hidden orbs. Why do they do this to gamers? Sure, I'm ok with collecting a few things in a game, but not 500.

Anyone else hate this?

The worst collection achievements are on Assassins Creed. I just can't be bothered running around looking for 100 flags for the sake of getting 20G's. :?

I am with you, I love getting achievements since most are fun but the collection achievements I always skip so it pisses me off when I can't get 1000/1000 on a game because it has a crapload of collection achievements (Assassin's Creed for one =_=)

Then stop being achievement whores.

I think achievements are cool and all but I would never put myself through hours of boredom to get some useless points.

I know! Come on, if we're gonna go to the effort of collecting them they could at least give us 100G's or something like that. I don't bother with them, I just get the combat and kill achievements. Much less hassle :)

It is lame, usually the difference between having 800 points and having 1000 points. It doesn't even take any skill, just alot of time for playing and sifting through a guide. It actually lessens the chance of me replaying the game...

what did you people do before achievements? i mean come on people, you play a game for one reason, it is fun. if you have fun collecting flags then do it, if you dont enjoy it, don't play it anymore. as someone earlier said, stop worrying about achievements. if they could be used for something it may be different, but why spend countless hours looking for 500 flags in one city just to say to your friend, "I have so little a life that I spent 10 hours searching for 500 flags, and it was boring, but I got an achievement for it." maybe life should have achievements so people would put more effort into it.

EX: Get an A on Math test 50 gamerscore, Get A on English Test 100 gamerscore. Buy 1,000,000 home, 500 gamerscore.

wouldn't that make things in life more interesting for you folks that get obsessed with it. i mean seriously, there are things to do in games without playing/buying games just for achievements. just buy games for the fun factor, and just play them for the fun factor and get real ppl.

I think in Halo 3 you have the most fun collecting ACHIEVEMENTS. Cause you dont have to collect 100 and most of them you can get on your first run through if your good.

Rambling aside I think what this post is trying to say is that people don't like collection achievments. Some people like to get all the achievments in games. That is their fun factor, so who are you to give other people advice on what should or shouldn't be considered fun? Or for that matter why they are playing games, because maybe they just play for achievments.

I absolutely hate collection achievements and online competitive achieves (halo 3 for example). However when i get all the flags, orbs, etc etc and I hear the achieve sound and the bar pop up I feel not only relieved but happy. I recall patience being a quality too seeing as many of you dont have any.

You shouldn't generalise like that. A lot of people don't buy games just to end up with 1000G's at the end of it. I think you'll find those people are quite rare, not many would sit there for hours and hours trying to get every last scrap of achievement possible

I think you'll find most 360 owners play the games and try to get some achievements if possible, but they don't become "obsessed". You're obviously obsessed with talking, since you rambled on for ages about something that could have been said in one sentence

But hey whatever works for you. Good day to you sir :)

Kid dont start with that no life b/s. I got a job and friends as well as school. I think its just that you suck at games =). Achievements or not i like to play the hell out of my games. I even tried to collect all the crap in GTA which is more annoying than Assassins Creed and Crackdown put together.

Oh I forgot something. You want to talk about sitting around aimlessly doing something useless......Why are you so active on these forums then? You sit around trying to get E-fame which has no value in reality. If you have time to sit around and comment on stupid topics all day then you sure do have time to collect a few things. Its all about preference. Dont go bashing someone about theirs contradicting yourself in the process.

I wouldn't have a problem with these achievements if they had to do with the story and weren't in such a large number. Something like finding pieces of something to build a new weapon is cool providing its not "I need an FAQ to continue throught the game". I got most of the orbs going through the game in single player and coop, but the rest is just stupid.

Developers devise this asine achievements and noone has realized the potential. I think back to the kind of things gamers themselves would create in the old days, like completing the game in under X amount of hours, completing the game only using a handgun, playthrough an RPG only using the initial equipment or at a lowest possible level. These are the things people themselves would think of and have fun trying to do but developers insist on making absurd collection achievements and some even more ridiculous ones like be ranked top 10 online, you know how many people will be able to get that achievement 10 thats neither reasonable nor enjoyable.

You dont have to say "you dont have a life" to actually mean it. Also im not the one who pulled out the the "I have a life" card. I recall you brought it up. You really need to go back to school or better yet fix the way you speak because you dont even know what you say and how its going to effect people.

Anyways, you people talk about achievement wh*res like they are a menace to society. If anything you all are achievement wh*res since you are complaining about simple achievements getting in the way of a perfect score or the fact that they are implemented into the game.

i wasn't generalizing, i was saying that what is an achievement getting you. 30 gamerscore. these guys are complaining about how they hate collection achievements, but why do they hate them? 2 reasons, they aren't fun, and they take forever. so instead of complain about them how bout you just not give a crap about achievements b/c they aren't getting you anything except a gamerscore. there is just no point in compaining about something that isn't going to change. if you like getting achievements and it makes you feel good go for it, but if you aren't enjoying an achievement then don't worry about it and don't complain just b/c you aren't enjoying getting 1000 gamerscore. if you aren't playing a game for the fun, you shouldn't be playing the game.

I don't mind collecting but when they go over the top, it really annoys me. I got all the 500 orbs in Crackdown eventually. Still got like 3 left on the hidden ones though. Assassin's Creed would have me a 1000 if I could get all those flags.

Agree Kinda Sorta. Other games come to my mind such as Assassins Creed (Collecting flags), Saints Row(Collecting CD's), and Orange Box/Half Life (Lambda Locator). I completed Crackdowns Orb Chase and Saints Rows CD Bonanza, but having little interest in finishing my other titles.

wouldn't that make things in life more interesting for you folks that get obsessed with it. i mean seriously, there are things to do in games without playing/buying games just for achievements. just buy games for the fun factor, and just play them for the fun factor and get real ppl.

But hey whatever works for you. Good day to you sir :)

At the beggining of his post he made a lot of sense though. People don't play games for achievments, well atleast i know i don't. I play my games to have fun and IF i have fun while getting some achievements then i probably will keep on getting them. I mean if your not having fun collecting stuff then just stop... Yea you won't end up with 1000/1000, but honestly who cares? By not doing the collection quests just shows that one you either don't like to do them or because two they are completely retarded, oh and then of course answer C which is they are boring, not fun to do, and completely retarded. It isn't the end of the world if you don't get the achievements.

Yes i will agree that it is crap that they put in these mindless, boring collection achievements, but i am sorry to say that i would rather have them then play a game were i can get all the achievements in about 30 minutes (Avatar and the entire 06 sports lineup).

Just because you get the collection achievements doesn't mean your entirely obsessed with the game, but that you either had one hell of a time or that yes you are completely obsessed with the game. I mean if you hate the game and you do get the collection achievements you are one an idiot and i would consider that being obsessed with achievements and not so much the game. Hating a game and playing it for hours to get achievements would be like shooting your self in the foot each and every day, but never enough to kill yourself. It is pointless and stupid...

SO if you like the game and you actually have fun getting the collection achievements (which by the way go way faster with online guides) then do them, but if you either dislike the game or don't like collection achievements then don't do them. You won't have 1000/1000 points but do you really want to say i just spent 6 hours doing something i really hated (unless you liked doing it).

This is why I really don't care about achievements. If finding the 500 orbs is fun, I'll do it. Unfortunately it really isn't and virtual points that mean nothing are not going to change that.

I just plain don't care about achievements. If I get one in the course of gameplay, like for beating a level or something, great, if not, I don't worry about it too much.

I usually only will do collection achievements if there's an in-game reward (better guns/gear, cheats, better abilities, etc).

And of course there's not an insane amount (Assassin's Creed).

But if it's just for the gamerscore, then I usually don't do them.
