Hey, I was just playing through Silent Hill Homecoming today and realised that its really not scary. I think the older ones are much better, I suppose the Americans cant make games as scary as the Japanese. I have always thought the atmosphiere was what made it but silent hill HC just isnt. I was wondering what you guys think. What makes a game really scary?

I haven't played Homecoming, but one of the things I think is crucial for a horror genre game is the background noise. Even with okay graphics, if a game has scary tense music in the back, it can be a great game to play!

Well i like the whole Silent Hil series, and i thought that this was pretty scary. You should know though that i get scared really easy so you have to take that into consideration ha. It wasn't the best Silent Hill game but it will remain in my collection.

All Dead Space has is a few things that jump out at you through the entire game.. so yeah i still say there is none.

I disagree, DS had an atmosphere that kept me freaked out most of the game. It wasn't being cheap by just having things jump at you out of the dark, some of those scenes and the audio logs in particular we're downright disturbing.

On-topic, I liked Homecoming a lot more than SH4. Couldnt even finish that one.

the game is not very scary....some decent atmospheric events and areas, but overall its decent.

Dead Space is NOT scary....not at all. Resident Evil for PSone was scarier.

The only game that is somewhat scary for 360, imo, would have to be condemned...everything else ive played doesnt even come close.

While there are plenty of videogames that are creepy and might make me jump if something happens suddenly, I have to say that none are truly scary to me and probably never will be until they can get to the point where the game would be photo-realistic. I can never get out of the mode of knowing that these are just videogame characters, whereas watching a movie I can be more easily scared since I'm watching "real" people. I give credit to games like Eternal Darkness, Fatal Frame series, RE Remake, Silent Hill 2, 3 and HC, Condemned and Condemned 2 plus Dead Space for creating great atmosphere.

Silent Hill Homecoming was an ok game. However, Silent Hill Homecoming shows that Konami and the developers have clearly lost the magic to their Silent Hill games; SH3 was the last good game in the series. The things that create fear the most is not knowing what's going on; fear of the unknown and, the environment (sounds, sight, weather, lighting, etc). Even the sound of dripping water or silent footsteps can enhance the mood. In addition, things that jump out of no where, or loud sounds forcing their way into a quiet environment work wonders on the heart and mind. The best thing needed to build this up is tension and suspense. Tension could be anything between creeping quietly out of a dark room, away from your hunter, only to knock your foot against a something. Also, seeing something run past you and making you believe there is something there. While you are walking cautiously toward it, you find out that nothing's there. Then, once you turn around, it pops up out of no where with some instant sound effects.
