Smoke Grenades in Gears 2 - Worst Design Choice Ever?

I have been playing the multiplayer in Gears 2 since release now, and I have gotten used the crappy matchmaking, the nerfed shotgun, and the op chainsaw, but nothing demonstrates that Cliffy B. is a complete moron more than the smoke grenades. How could someone put something like that in a game and then claim they are trying to make it more tactical? The whole point of Gears is that it is fast paced, designed for people with reflexes and skill. Now Gears 2 rewards the worst of gamers, those who use smoke for an easy kill, or sit back and wait for their proximity mine to kill someone.

I cannot think of any game with such crappy design decisions when compared to the overall quality of the series.

it really does. i get so sick of the smoke nade to chainsaw combo. i love playing this game with friends, but online...forget about it.

yeh your right, when we play a game we should like everything about it, no one deserves an opinion if it isnt all positive, good thinking. Imagine if that was actually the case? think about it, all games would be terrible because no one would have learned from mistakes of the past

and yeh smoke granades are annoying, especially when all 5 people on the other team throw them consecutively to where you are

They only added it because all you scrubs cried all day and night about how the shotgun took no skill (aka "Everyone kills me with it and I can't kill them, therefore it takes no skill") so they added so much unnecessary things to the game to make the shotgun useless. Added the smokes was created for that sole purpose, although it has been exploited and now you have threads such as this everywhere. You should've just got skill instead of crying about it. You still have no skill and keep crying anyway.

uh... what? youre thinking of halo. gears was intended to be slower paced and focusing on tactics rather than who can shoot the other person in the head first.

I like the smoke grenades, but the frag mines are annoying, they need to make it so you can stick one nade to a wall.

I agree. I hate the smoke grenades. Perhaps they should have made it so you got stunned for a very short period of time, just holding your eyes, as that would give the player that threw the smoke a slight advantage while not hindering the other player so much so that they cannot do anything. Annex, which is my favourite mode to play, is horrible online now because if you control the zone, people just throw smoke in, kill you, and that is that. I don't mind them making something of the smoke grenade, but they made it far too powerful.

Yup, smokes nades have essentially killed the territories game type, with the exception of Submission....maybe. The other thing that gets me, is what did Epic think was going to happen when giving smokes knockdown power. Its just another way for an unskilled player to pick up random kills....throw smoke, run to downed enemy, rev chainsaw until enemy stands up, chainsaw enemy, get splattered by another enemies shotty, rinse and repeat. Cliffy probably put that in because he was sick of not getting any kills in a game he masterminded......

All games are horrible online if you don't play with friends. Everygame will be exploited it's just the nature of the beast. If you play with people you know they won't be throwing nades every 2 secs. But back to the topic I have no problem with them. I have one; you have one what's the problem? If you get caught out you should have threw your's first. If you can't beat em join em that's what I say and yeah you might not want to do it because you think it's cheap but better to alive being cheap instead of being blown to bits because you too proud to use your smoke. lol

lol, I think you missed the whole pt. The pt. is you (and I'm not saying you personally it's used as a pronoun) complained about GOW1 shotty; so they did something to switch up the gameplay a little so the shotty complaints would be handled. Now you're complaining about the changes and basically want GOW1 back. lol I mean make up your mind. And I hate to bust your bubble but if your crying about constantly being killed by a smoke generade then yea you need to step your game up. Or get a team thats gonna have your back. This is the new gaming trend to cry like a baby. I got killed the shotty is too strong, I got killed the smoke nade is too strong, I got killed the chainsaw is op, I got killed the pistol is too accurate, I got killed the boom shot is cheap, I got killed tb is cheap, I got my head popped off that was a lucky sniper shot, etc. Are you getting the picture now? Everything is cheap to you guys and at the end of the day you have the same opportunity as the next player.

Actually, your wrong, in a couple ways at that. Go ahead and pull out your Gears of War 2 manual and check out page 6. I think YOU are the only one discussing a "flash bang. They call it "smoke" in the book......not flashbang. Was it a flashbang in Gears 1....negative. And it simply doesnt fit in this game.

Oh, and another thing? Why would you even try to compare "real life" with this game. Its not COD dude! Its not supposed to be realistic in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM....If i walked by a flashbang in real life it probably would knock me on my a**, but you know what, in real life, yesterday, I hit a brumak with my truck and then veered in to an emergence hole, got out, and was immediatley downed by a "SMOKE" nade, and then chainsawed by some noob theron, but then I respawned because I was playing Guardian.......IN REAL LIFE.......:roll:

I think it's alright, it's just that giving player somthing like that to spawn with was probably a bad idea. If it's going to keep the concusive blast, then don't make it a spawn weapon, please.

4. The whole point of smokes and mines is to make you constantly watch your front, sides, and back. If you don't mind your surroundings you're going to get killed. Funny how the "noobs" are usually the ones with more kills than the "pros."

lmao dude I can't believe you wrote this. Just gonna tell you this one thing and I'm done with you. Everything is GOW is realistic. For that matter every shooter is realistic unless it's has a fantasy spin on it like Halo. The only thing you can say is the Locust are monsters but they behave like humans, but JC they speak English for heaven's sake. So you could be wrong on that as well. Even the weapons are realistic. Think about it. Dude how old r u? Have you even heard of symbolism?

LOL. you should seriously consider becoming a comedian. Gears is fast paced? on the contrary, gears is the most slow, unresponsive, and messed up game i have ever played.(in terms of shooters) this is a game that decides the winner by who has the fastest internet speeds. no real skill is involved, only mastering the stupid complexities of the game until you can kill someone BEHIND you with a shotgun.

Hate to break it to you but Gears has always been a crappy shooter. Where on earth do all you people get fast pace, reflexes and skill from when 1) the people move slower than the stupid snails in my backyard (curse those things) 2) Just about 2/3rds of the weapons are power weapons and if you dont have one then you are screwed.

I love how people say Gears is a game of skill when its one of the most poorly made shooters EVER. I honestly dont know how people play such a horrid game. Gears of wars gameplay has always rewarded the worst of gamers. Its about who can take advantage of all the power weapons or glitch around the map and chainsaw/shotgun you.

My god finally!!!! Someone who flipping actually has more than 1/10th of their brain working. I found the common sense!

No seriously though its about time I found someone who understands the game for what it truely is...A laggy, glitchy, unresponsive, snails paced shooter. I may not be great at Gears (because I dont know how to glitch as well as the rest of you people) but I know if I take the shotgun to someones face, especially point blank range, fire it then that should be the end of the line for the person I am aiming for. In Gears, that sure as hell doesnt happen. If Im lucky I would get sniped or torqued from a mile away before the guy im next to turns around and shotguns me.

i think they work fine, is another way to hit, and if u are fast enough u can avoid the granade, lots of times u have disvintage and these granades can come handy; i dont like that much theee chainsaw combo tho

lol, ok. Well do you have a clan because your gamertag sounds offly familiar? But like I said I don't play GOW like that, so if you play wit MLG rules and play everyday for like 4 hrs. then I'm pretty sure you would own me. But you might have trouble wit my friends. lol, they never lose.

It's not the fact that I hate the smoke grenades. It's the fact that I hated how if you're on stairs or near another object, being hit by it can throw you off the map and kill you, make you slide for 10 minutes, two people getting hit by a smoke nade and one always gets up faster to kill the other. Alot of annoying things happen.

lol, what? You guys know we're really discussing a flash bang that emites smoke right? I can't believe there are like 20 ppl here saying a nade shouldn't knock you down. Huh? If you walk passed one in real life you would be on your butt quik. lol Dude if you walked passed one in real life and that thing started beaping you would probably jump outta your skin. You wouldn't just stand there with your hands over your eyes like the mod said. lol I mean you do agree you would be disoriented in some form correct? Whether you standing up or on the ground I don't think really makes a difference. You gonna get chopped up or shot with the shotty as soon as you come back anyway.

This isn't real life, its a game. And there are so many things that aren't realistic about Gears I don't even know where to start.

ok, what do Marcus or Dom do that you can't beside take more bullets? I know that like you said it's a game so you gotta take more bullets than you can in real life.

I don't mind them as the beep is there that let's you react and jump out of the way if your character didn't already scream "incomming smoke!" already.

I hate being killed while I am on the ground from a smoke grenade, and it seems like they have a pretty ridiculous blast radius (I've been a solid 30 feet away from one and sent flying). It is definitely pretty cheap to just run into a smoke cloud with a shotty and chunk three people while the can't get up. And if you ever go down on stairs or any kind of incline you are totally screwed, I have seen it take about 30 seconds of me sliding down before I am able to stand up and fight back. I think the game would have been better served if they had replaced the almost entirely useless poison grenade with smoke grenades as a pick up item. That way every match on maps like Blood Drive wouldn't begin with a smoke-throwing cluster %$^ in the middle.

Actually, your wrong, in a couple ways at that. Go ahead and pull out your Gears of War 2 manual and check out page 6. I think YOU are the only one discussing a "flash bang. They call it "smoke" in the book......not flashbang. Was it a flashbang in Gears 1....negative. And it simply doesnt fit in this game.

Oh, and another thing? Why would you even try to compare "real life" with this game. Its not COD dude! Its not supposed to be realistic in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM....If i walked by a flashbang in real life it probably would knock me on my a**, but you know what, in real life, yesterday, I hit a brumak with my truck and then veered in to an emergence hole, got out, and was immediatley downed by a "SMOKE" nade, and then chainsawed by some noob theron, but then I respawned because I was playing Guardian.......IN REAL LIFE.......:roll:

Why would you even compare COD to real life? Wtf is wrong with you? Halo is more realistic than COD for the simple fact that atleast with Master Chief, you see he has armor which creates shields and after a certain time, the shields regenerate. On the other hand, can you find me a human who can regenerate health? I thought so..

They only added it because all you scrubs cried all day and night about how the shotgun took no skill (aka "Everyone kills me with it and I can't kill them, therefore it takes no skill") so they added so much unnecessary things to the game to make the shotgun useless. Added the smokes was created for that sole purpose, although it has been exploited and now you have threads such as this everywhere. You should've just got skill instead of crying about it. You still have no skill and keep crying anyway.

Most people disliked the shotgun because it removed the point of the game... i would like to call it the Kill.Switch. They game was made to be a replica of that game which brought us hiding behind walls and blind firing. This game was basically a remake (gears 1) and then Epic gave us the shotgun and removed the entire point of hiding behind a wall. Do you remember playing Gear 1? There was a map with a downed Heli and that game was a complete shotgun fest with grenades tossed in. There was no reason to play the game like you are supposed to.... you know tactically. IF the game was run-n-gun it would be called a FPS. Also have you ever watched a shotgun fight? 2 people rolling like crazy until someone pulls the trigger at the right time. Yep that sounds like a ton of skill to me.

i agree, halo is fast pace along with alot of first person ahooters and thats why GOW 2 is not. Its supposed to be a medium to slower paced game that involves a cover system, which automatically slows down the play. Smokes are a good idea, because they are possible to avoid within the game during the multiplayer. Anybody who complains about the smoke non stop should also complain about sawing, shotguning, and everything in betwween and just not play the game. You have to learn to adapt to the game play, which causes you to get better. I don't complain about sawing especially because i do from time to time. It'd the game. Get used to it.

i think its funny when people suck at a game and blame it on anything, and i mean anything. The matchmaking system in gears 2 is absoutely amazing. No more hosts and hive some diversity in the matches. Bungie almost perfected the current matchmaking system and then epic made it impossibly better. Itstead of just voiding out the map everytime, you vote sometime making a tie. flawless
