k, so. Ever since my console was knocked over by accident, I've had the 'disc is unreadiable error' come up. Since buying GTA IV, this problem has increased. I'm unable to play a game for no more than 20 minutes before the console locks up and freezes on me.

I've done all the troubleshooting bull, and have finally determined theres a problem with my disc drive. I mean, it scratches my games!

Anyone else having these issues? I've sent my console in for repairs... good idea?

If you put it on its side, you double the chances of getting RROD. The sides have vents on them and when you cover the vents, the heat is redirected back into the console. It can go out the other vents, but it has to go by all of the important hardware and electronics first, causing the motherboard/other electronics to overheat and melt internally. DO NOT PUT IT ON ITS SIDE! However, some consoles lack the proper holding mechanism for the disks. Standing the console up causes the disk to slant a little bit, getting it off the tray slightly. This causes it to scratch up against the reading laser when it rotates, causing deep, round scratches around the disk, rendering the disks unplayable. The XBOX 360 has a crappy disk tray, and it should be fixed. However, for most games, standing the console up is still the better option. And yes, original poster, your drive is faulty. However, there are too many "faults" in the drive to figure out what is faulty. It did probably mess up when it fell over. Try contacting Microsoft yo see what your options are.

I've kept my box on it's side since I bought it one year ago and I haven't had any problem with it due to overheating. I'd be to nervous of the thing falling over, it's not very stable and the side of the console (if it's sitting horizontal) has more vents on it than the bottom so why wouldn't those affect the temperature of the console?

My dvd drive went out a little more than a month ago and they replaced it under the one year warranty so it wasn't a big deal. Everything has been working fine since I got it back a few weeks ago.
