I'd always heard about how crummy the D-Pad was, but i'd never experienced that badly.  I was playing the sequel to a fighting game that i was good at yesterday and was just getting my arse handed to me.  I kept hitting buttons and the D-Pad was just registering something way off (like Up instead of Back).  I tried using the analog stick but that just wasn't cutting it.

I remembered that people said that it wasn't actually the D-Pad or its sensors, but rather the plastic shell it sits in.  I had the idea to try and use a lighter to melt the plastic down, but after trying that I saw a steak knife by my desk and a light bulb went off.  After about 10 minutes of work, i was able to totally remove the shell that covers it.  I went back to play the game and low and behold, when I do double taps, they work.  Everything is back to how it should be.

If anybody is having troubles with the D-Pad, a trip to your kitchen in all it takes.  My controller is fugly now, but it works perfectly.

Do you have pictures of the finished product? I'm pretty interested to see it.

Totally agree. I've been thinking about doing this but I may wait for SF4 and Tekken 6. Also if MVC2 comes to XBLA or if I decide to get SSFIIHDR.

I need to buy some white paint. Using a lighter was the dumbest idea i've come up with in the past few years. I was totally sober when I thought of it so i'm not sure why my brain didn't throw up red flags. I'll post the pic though, you all will get a laugh out of it cuz it looks straight up horrible. Effective and much improved, but horrible.

I have a HDTV and it doubles as a tv, pc monitor, and game monitor so its like the hub of my room. If i'm doing something fun in my house, i'm probably near it. Oddly, the knife wasn't a dirty dish though. I use it to split cigars for unstated purposes.

The point of the lighter was... for some reason I thought that there might be sensors right near the outer ring so I didn't want to cut it. I knew I could melt it down and that wouldn't damage anything too badly. Once I melted it enough and could see that it was just hollow in the middle, I busted out the steak knife. Had I known from the get go that it was hollow, I never would have bothered with the lighter and the final product would have looked waaaaaaaaaaaay better.

This thread's quite amusing. I'm quite impressed you got real results from your "surgery" there.

Lol, electronics can be very sensitive to heat. I'd think you would be better off slicing around with a knife than setting the place a blaze.

But, I am pretty impressed that you actually got it to work. The sand paper method seems to be a little more precise IMO. I'll probably give that a go.
