I'd always heard about how crummy the D-Pad was, but i'd never experienced that badly. I was playing the sequel to a fighting game that i was good at yesterday and was just getting my arse handed to me. I kept hitting buttons and the D-Pad was just registering something way off (like Up instead of Back). I tried using the analog stick but that just wasn't cutting it.
I remembered that people said that it wasn't actually the D-Pad or its sensors, but rather the plastic shell it sits in. I had the idea to try and use a lighter to melt the plastic down, but after trying that I saw a steak knife by my desk and a light bulb went off. After about 10 minutes of work, i was able to totally remove the shell that covers it. I went back to play the game and low and behold, when I do double taps, they work. Everything is back to how it should be.
If anybody is having troubles with the D-Pad, a trip to your kitchen in all it takes. My controller is fugly now, but it works perfectly.
