I can't play original Xbox games unless I have a hard drive? I've been thinking of buying a 360 but I would not be using it for downloadable content or anything, just gaming. Thus, I decided to go with Core since I can get brand new one with a memorycard for a pretty good price.. 180 euros (That's 255 dollars for you yanks.. Premium costs 350 euros, or 500 dollars).

The thing is.. I want to play through a few original Xbox titles. I tried to google if this was possible but all I was able to find out was something about backwards compatibility updates and something about the initial list of working games. So.. Do Any games at all work without the hard drive? Or is it possible to run the backwards compatibility software from your memory card?

You need the harddrive, but remember, most of the Xbox games aren't even supported, or if they are, may not work correctly. Marvel Vs Capcom 2, for instance, is unplayable, but supported.

Why? Not all people need the stuff that comes with the premium.. I'm just one of them.

Anyways, thank you for the answers. I guess I can live without the Xbox titles. Halo 2 would have been nice sine I dont plan to get Vista anytime soon but I suppose I can wait.

the premium is the best. okay, so if you change your mind later and get an hdd, buying a core now is ok, but youre still a bit behind. you really don't expect to need the hdd as much as you actually use it. downloadable content can be really sweet, and even if a game can go online with just a memory card plugged in, if the game is updated, you wont be able to play online without the update. plus the disc drive has shiny on it. :P

If you read his post he's not saying that they're not compatible, he's saying that it's ridiculous that he can't play BC games without a HDD

The thing is, I'm not really a console player anymore(PC FTW  ). I would only use the 360 for a few exclusives (Halo 3, Gear of War to name a few.. An yes, I know they are coming to PC sooner or later but I dont really like Vista.) and mainly when I invite the guys over for a few rounds of NHL and Halo. So I'm not thatkeen on paying twice as much just so I can get a HDD, which I would not use. I mean really.. Demo's, movies and retro games? I have a PC for that.

But the Premium is shiny?!Hell, I have to reconsider! :P

also, there can be major new amounts of content.... ie. oblivion shivering isles, the extra crackdown stuff, maps for gears that you need to play some game types.... the gta:iv episodes..... and seeing as there is the extra 250 achievemnets points rule now, i can;t see microsoft not releasing another 250 points for halo 3.... and you need the hdd for that.

Well I already have Oblivion.. Crackdown doesn't really intrest me and if PS3 owners can survive without the GTA IV content, I can too. The Gears of War thing does bug me a little but it's nothing I could not get over.. Do the extra maps cost something?

Andwhat's this 250 pointrule you're talking about?

I think it's rediculous how MS and Sony made so many variations of their consoles and have now started eliminating the lower end models. Core isnt supported anymore because it lacks the capabilities that make the 360 able to compete with PS3. Backwards compatibility, movie downloads, demo downloads... all missing.

I think i heard somewhere that Halo 1 and 2 are already compatible on all 360. In other words i don't think that you need a hard drive to play any of the Halo games.

I use to think that same thing. However, my Premium Xbox 360 got the RRoD, and Microsoft took 3+ months to finally get me a coffin (box) to send it back. So I ended up buying a Core as it was much cheaper, and I just used my original hard drive. So the core does have it's uses, but unless you already have a hard drive, the Premium/Elite would be the way to go.

I finally got the box to return my Premium, and I'll keep my core as a backup in case I get the RRoD again.

I seee you have 'Go Oilers' in your sig, you from Edmonton? I'm on the Southside of Edmonton :P It's kinda ridiuclous that it took 3 months to get the box, My old boss had his box and a new console back to him 12 days from when he called

You wanna save games right? You need a hard drive for that. Unless you plan on beating games in one sitting.

And all 3 Halo games can be played on the 360.
