My theory (which led me to buy it) is that if you have a 360, and you want an HD format, it might be better than a standalone player. The only downside is that if your 360 RROD's, you can't use the HD player either... If you are connected to the internet, you can get updates that for the HDDVD player without having to hook it up to your computer (unlike a standalone).

I love HD movies, whether it's 720p-1080i-1080p, it all blows SD away. My onlu complaint about the add-on for the 360 is it's almost the price of a stand alone player. I went with a stand alone player and am glad I did, those add-ons are good but only work with the 360, meaning if the 360 breaks then you can't watch HD movies.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray look the same both are just essentially DVDs that play at a higher resolutiononly the storage capcity of the disc is different. I sense you think because PS3 tends to have slightly worse graphics than 360 is why you think this.

I've been thinking of getting it soon as well. i foudn that you can download drivers and it will work as an external Xp/VISTA player so your PC can play videos while your 360 is broken. So that technically isn't true that you can't use it when your 360 breaks.

Also, doesn't toshiba have a 5 HDDVD giveaway with any player?

I have had mine since day one. Back when it was expensive and didn't come with 5 free HD DVD and all that. Compared to Standard Def DVD's you can see the difference. Especially if you have a decent setup (TV, sound, Room, etc). Compared to Blu-Ray, they are pretty similar, you will really start to see the difference depending on your TV type (plasma, LDC, projector, etc). I like the fact that a lot of HD DVD movies are combo format. So I can take my movies to a friends or relatives house even if they don't have a Hi Def DVD player. A nice touch. Overall, I like it. It is the cheapest way to go digital as of now. By the way, I have had my 360 since launch and not once has it given me the RROD. It HASforzen like twice, but that's about it.

My family has really enjoyed our HD DVD player since we bought it March 07 at Fred Meyer in Seattle. HD movies look great and standard DVDs look better, too. Be sure to buy a protection package for your investment, for if anything happens to it you can have it replaced or fixed for free. Microsoft provides a 90 warranty so the added protection is worth it if you play movies frequently. Purchase one until Feb 2008 and I believe you can fill out a rebate form to receive five free HD movies through Microsoft. Just sweetens the deal.

I have one, and enjoy it. Although i wish it came standard in all 360's like PS3 and blue ray. 300 in HD is freaking awsome.

at first the add on made sense, it was a cheaper alternative... but now toshiba has a $199 player. The need to drop the price of it to $120-150. I may as well buy a standalone because I wont have to worry about not being able to play my HDDVD movies if my 360 RRODs (a very good chance!). Also I'll be able to use HDMI to view movies (my 360 is a launch era system with no HDMI). I think I'm just gonna buy a standalone myself.

I love mine, I bought it the day Transformers came out and then took my receipt back to Best Buy when they were offering season 1 of Heroes for free with it. I got Heroes, King Kong, and five free movies by mail so I can't complain. Plus I think it makes your regular DVD's look much better.

HD DVD and Blu-ray are pretty much identical. They use the same video codecs. I have a PS3 and the 360 add on and both look amazing.

Another feature to both formats(I think) is that they do not have compressed sound like DVDs..so for big sound systems that is a plus. I still have not bought the add-on though since I can live without buying Paramount movies in HD. I bought Transformers for DVD and had no problems with it at all. I'll stick with BR for the time being and finger's crossed it won't go the way of Beta Max

I want it so much, $170 plus 5 three movies is a good deal, seeing as 5 movies equal $150 alone, but I need to wait out the war before I buy. Now I know what people felt like in 1944...

HDDVD uses compressed audio, BD uses uncompressed audio.

How far off you are. They dont look they same, nor sound the same. Because BD has more disk space it can fit on more detail, detail which on the equiv HDDVD disk has to be removed to fit. Not only that but many HDDVD disks either have a good soundtrack or they use an old DVD one and put extras on instead, BD doesnt have to make that compromise. If you're going to buy HDDVD (which you shouldnt) go for a standalone.

PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS BLU-RAY FANBOY, where in the hell did you get that Blu-Ray disc have more detail because it has more space please do some research before u come to these forums posting false information, we all know HD-DVD's have always used the superior VC-1 encoding long before any grainy Blu-Ray disc has, more space doesn't mean more detail on a HD disc it just means more space

The only concession HD-DVD has on Blu-Ray is the compressed audio I've watched both and unless you have a good sound system theres hardly a difference. Maybe Blu-Ray is a little sharper but the difference isn't great. So if you don't have surround sound the difference is irrelevent.

First off h264 which both have is better than VC1. Secondly both are lossey formats which means the more of the original signal they can keep the better the quality and this is directly linked with both data access speed and storage, both of which BD has the advantage on. If you're going to say something on this at least do your research.

I own both of them and just for the fun of it got "300" for both. Unless you spend 30 min just staring on a screen and actually looking for very SLIGHT difference, they look IDENTICAL!!! I'd say, if you want to save money - go for HDDVD. Then get PS3 after next price drop :)

HD-DVD looks and sounds superb even in 720p on a Premium console using Component. Even if your setup isn't many thousands of dollars, you can still enjoy HD movies. There are quite a few excellent titles out in HD-DVD, but if you are looking at this as a "Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD" thing, I will honestly say that the Blu-Ray library appeals to me more. I have about 3x the amount of Blu-Rays as HD-DVDs. They look and sound the same though (this from a hardcore audio/videophile) so it really comes down to which movies you just have to have in HD.

Transformers is definitely the marquee title on HD-DVD.

Most reviews of both formats the hd dvd videoqualityusually scores higher. Also major strong points for hd dvd. They are using more interactive disc features. It costs way way less to convert or build a facility to burn hd dvd then blu ray(this means its easier and cheaper for companies to do hddvd). Hd dvd players cost way less then the equivelant blu ray player. China is making knock off players thathd dvd discs work and their movies work on ours having the support of china is huge. Recently Disney home entertainment showed interest in future hd dvd technology voting to show interest in the new dual layer 51 gig hd dvd discs. I also feel that overall hd dvd has better movie releases with way more interactive and added content look at 300 as an example. Also the base model toshiba stand alone players do no play 1080p the 360 add on does however.

My take is that there are some stand alone players out there that are or will very soon be under the $200 price mark. While the 360 HD-DVD add on is the cheapest option for HD-DVD right now, I would rather spend an extra $20 on a stand alone that doesn't depend on the 360 console. Less chance of RROD.

They use MPEG4 AVC, which is also known as h264. The early ones like the early HDDVDs used MPEG2.

this whole argument is pointless. they've had their chance, and flopped on the marketing push. DVD upscalers are acheiving the EXACT same visual quality with standard dvds. They need to drop the prices, make a massive push or its game over and the upscalers will have it until the next format.

They need to drop the prices, make a massive push or its game over and the upscalers will have it until the next format.darksusperia

You cant be serious...a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray movie looks WAAAY better than a upconverted DVD. LOL

this whole argument is pointless. they've had their chance, and flopped on the marketing push. DVD upscalers are acheiving the EXACT same visual quality with standard dvds. They need to drop the prices, make a massive push or its game over and the upscalers will have it until the next format.darksusperia

Man hd looks incredible, simply amazing. And its an upconvert, which means your regular dvds that you play through it look better. So yea, i payed 200 for it and it was well worth it.
