The much older PS3 has Blu-Ray 3D and that didn't help it much against the non-blu-ray playing, DVD only playing 360.
I think this will have no effect. Your poll doesn't have that option but it's my answer.

Also, no need to make repeat 3D Blu-Ray threads.
I'm not sure it's going to change anything, but just a question on this does this mean that the hardware has to change and will people have to buy a new xbox 1 in order to have this ability? or can this truly be done with just an app?

PS3 did it with an update years ago and the Xbone will do the same. No new hardware needed.
I think Sunset will ramp up its sales in October, but the big guns with Halo master cheif collection in november should serve to impress!
Who cares about 3D bluray? Isn't the 2010s 3D movie fad over already until they try again in another 30 years? If the Xbox beats PS4 in August, I don't think it will have anything to do with this.
Don't think so, it would be a minor help imo, 3D isn't that big yet. Also, this rattled Sony's cage and they just announced they will soon come up with 3d support as well, so it looks like both consoles will be equal in that respect fairly soon.

Next week actually, before the Xbone update it turns out.

Yup, that is what I read too. It's almost certain Sony was holding it back but decided to release it once MS made the press release. Perfect example why these 2 companies competing is just great for the consumers overall. I'm slowly starting to regret I didn't get 3D support on my recently purchased 50 inch TV. It saved me paying more for it, and I love 3D in the movie theatre(not for all movies though, just a few), I wasn't really interested in getting it for my TV but now that they announced 3D support I feel left out a bit lol....oh well, doesn't matter too much because movies I have seen in 3D overall, to be honest, it seemed gimmicky more than anything.....but for the few movies that 3D was well done, I really enjoyed it.

Actually, it was rumored/semi-confirmed even a week(s) a big PS4 update was coming having to do with media playback. It looks like this was the rumored PS4 update due this week according to the rumor from an 'insider". I take those things with a grain of salt, but here we are and it's confirmed. We can't say for certain why things happen nor the timing, but speculation and spin is clearly welcome regarding timing. Since I own all the consoles, I tend to keep up on all three instead of just one machine.
To me, it's not a perfect example because again, we don't have all the facts regarding how long it took to get these updates ready, etc. It's certainly an example if we fill in the gaps with speculation, but a perfect example would be something more concrete which there is plenty of examples I'll refrain from in this thread. I know 3D Blu-ray support for PS4 was expected as Sony has experience with 3D Blu-Ray having sold 3D HDTVs and of course, their very own 3D Blu-ray players and 3D Blu-Ray capable older PS3.
In any event, it's happening for both, but still I will use neither for this purpose due to my superior AV setup. I will just use the current consoles for games since neither the PS4 nor the Xbone can even keep up with the PS3's media and Blu-Ray features at this stage (including the Bluetooth remote).
Regarding 3D since you seem interested: Keep in mind there are two types of 3D, passive and active. Active is supports 1080p 3D images, but passive is cheaper and gives 540p per eye 3D instead. A lot of people skip 3D HDTVs and others buy the cheaper, passive 3D HDTVs and as I've heard, then proclaim 3D not as good at home. It's possible to enjoy the cheaper 3D, the resolution isn't 1080p as Active is. Try them out and see what works for you. Keep that in mind with your future purchases.
For those that waited to enjoy Blu-Rays after all these years with the recently released Xbone, this update is good news provided they have the equipment.
Oh yeah I agree there is no conclusive evidence, that's why I was careful to use the word "almost", it's just my opinion because Sony announced it like a day or two I think after MS, that's all, and it could very well be the case as you stated, no way of knowing for sure....but I was trying to make a positive point out this, I was not trying to make Sony look bad or anything, it was to say that these 2 companies competing with eachother is good for the consumer.
Thanks for the tip about 3D, I do extensive research on new techs like that before I buy, but good to know now instead of later.

I see. Yeah, I can see the angle. In an different forum, sometimes they take good news and spin it for another company. Anyways, I agree.
Competition is good, for sure, most times at least.
As far as 3D, I have a friend that went with cheaper passive 3D and he doesn't like it. He enjoys my other friends 3D active setup and just regrets plunking down on the cheaper 3D, but that's what happens sometimes. It's like IMAX. There is the cheaper IMAX, usually referred to as LieMAX and then there is the true IMAX theatres. Without research, it's hard for the typical consumer to know where to see IMAX movies like The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises in true 70 mm glory.
Most people just think, I went to IMAX and saw it, good enough. That's a tangent example, but yeah, without research sometimes ignorance is bliss, or worse, people think, "3D isn't so good" or "IMAX wasn't that good". It's all in the details, lol.
If you can't tell, I'm a big movie aficionado so calibration and knowing what I'm in for is a big deal. I refuse to watch certain movies streaming (or let my lady do so) on Netflix for instance, especially if I have the Blu-Ray sitting in my library, lol. Gotta get that 7.1 system fired up, on the Plasma, and do it right, or not do it at all. Streaming services are just fine though for movies I don't care too much about, older stuff, and of course TV shows. If I have it and sought it down on Blu-Ray, it's the only way to watch.
This might have been mentioned by someone with an earlier reply, but I think the ps4 is also getting an update for 3d blu ray soon. I think the games is what will make a push in sales. One example is halo. I have friends who are thinking about buying an xbox one specifically to buy the new halo game when it comes out.
I expect the 3D Blu-Ray for Xbone will be here shortly. Today Sony rolled out the 3D Blu-Ray for their PS4 and I expect Xbone to get updated soon as well.
Honestly, I will try and preserve my new machines as much as possible and don't use their Blu-ray apps.
