Is there a certain program I have to run or does it work immediately after plugging the ethernet plugs in?

You need to have a router to make your internet connection work. The macbook doesn't act as one as far as I know. Or you can plug the ethernet cord directely into the wall if your house is wired for it. One word of advice though, make sure you don't get the Wireless Adapter, it blows.

Don't have Mac at home. With a Windows machine, you have to enable Internet Sharing.

If you already have the network cable, I would suggest hooking it up and see what happens. If it doesn't work, then you can refine your question.
