Please someone help me. i am not a hardcore gamer and need some advice. i have been addicted to Fallout3 and eagerly await Fallout: new vegas. In the meantime i would like another game to try with the same sort of player freedom you get with Fallout. CAN YOU HELP?

The most obvious reccomendation would be Oblivion, but it depends wether you liked Fallout for the freedom or the setting. Oblivion is the same style of game, but set in medievil times, swords and shields, horses, etc etc.

Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, Mass Effect (though not open world, but gives you tons of freedom in terms of dialog permutations), Borderlands and GTA IV come to mind...

The STALKER games, might be worth a try and you can get them pretty cheap but they are PC only I think.

Well, since Oblivion is pretty much the exact same thing, I'd say that. As far as the whole atmosphere thing, you could try Borderlands. They're two completely different game types, but they're similar.
