I was just reading some guys thread on how when you initially get the premium 360 with the hard drive, theres only 13 gigs available or so, with 7 used for system use.

This got me thinking - does that mean that the premium 360 with the hard drive runs CONSIDERABLY better than one that just uses memory cards?

Many people buy the core, and then just use a memory card - no harddrive. That system is without these "missing 7 gigs"

Can someone explain this to me? How come the premium needs the 7, and the core doesnt use any?

Does that mean that the core doesnt have Marketplace or even a dashboarD? I dont get it!

Well to play Xbox 1 games you need an HDD. Also, I know games like Oblivion use the HDD for cache, improving the loading times. R* was apparently having a hard time getting the new GTA game to run on the core, since it didn't have an HDD.

Even so, 7 gigs for system use it A LOT

think about it, even vista and xp use less than that (me thinks)

you got one system runnin with 7 gigs to do whatever it wants, and another running off the memory card - yet they play games

the same?? I will look into this...

Out of those 7 gigs you can delete about 4 gigs... The only necessary things left are ~2-3 gigs of stuff.

The system is not really getting 7 GB, since a 20 GB HDD dosnt have 20 GB to start with. Buy any HDD for your computer, and you never get the full advertised space. I really don't understand what this has to do with MS ripping us off.

You only miss less then 2GB when you delete all the music etc. it comes with. The system pretty much gets nothing. a 20GB HDD doesn't have 20GB by default. Just like PC HDD's of 200GB only come with 190GB or so. You never get the full advertised space.

You can also play the Xbox 360 without a HDD or memory unit.

So, to answer your question, no.

That 7 GB is compiled of demos, crap, videos, more crap, and what not, and then 2 GB of that 7 GB perminently stays reserved as a data cache.

exactly, once a system has been configured, it needs an allocated amount of memory to save all these options. Also, the hdd normally has a live arcade game built in, also the backwards compatability memory. which we all love, however limited it still is. If you buy a core and just save off memory cards your enjoyment of the console is somwhat limited. No downloads of updates, patches and expansions. XBox live becomes minimal and the console basically becomes outdated very quickly.
