When you get to be a higher level, some monsters drop really good weapons. Not to mention expoloring and side quests will give you a decent arsenal.

level 20 is when you start seeing the final armour and weapons (deadric and glass) and 22 is when you start finding enchanted versions of that armour. but the generally its better to enchant your own, personally i have a full set of daedric and glass with some pretty awesome stats :)

be wary that damage from arrows, axes, swords, maces etc depend on the related skill, so the higher your marksman skill is the more damage done by bow and arrows, the higher your blade skill is the more damage done by swords.  so an elven arrow in the hands of someone with 100 marksman can do more damage than a daedric arrow with a marksman skill of 50

A big thanks from me as well.

I'm playing Oblivion and the thing I find surprising is some of the quests you are asked to do seem way above your level, or am I not doing something right?

Two examples [SPOILER ALERT]

I'm being asked to get a ring from a well. Now when I dive down and take the ring it is so heavy that I cannot swim out of the well again. I assume I need the bouyancy spell but I'm only Level 7 and it appears I've got to be something like Level 20???

I've been asked to collect the scales from 12 of a particular type of fish, however, at my current level tha seems a long and laborious task - surely it shouldn't be that bad.

But then maybe, I'm not enchanting my weapons like I should?

You just need to be able to cast one of the load carrying spells (I forgot the names). You can buy then in Cyrodil at the market of the main city. You will get some really good loot once you complete all the Wizards quests.

Well, for your first example the problem is that the ring has been enchanted so that it weighs a lot and you immediately become overencumbered when you pick it up. You can wait until you have a Feather spell, or you can dump as much of your gear as possible before you start the quest. You can pick it all up again after you've completed the quest.

For the Rumare Slaughterfish quest, yep, it's just a pain in the backside. It takes a long time. The reward is okay at the end of it though.

Maybe you can come back to that quest later in the game when you're at a higher level. Items that have the feather enchantment also work well or items that increase strength.

That's what I'm guessing, but my point was it is strange that you get given quests to do at a point so early in the game where you have little chance of completing them.

you have to dump everything(you need to be nekkid!) and use the spell or you can just pick it up, drop it, and then go back to the lizard lady and talk to her.

For the scales, i did that at level one. just fight each fish and then heal or wait after every one. be sure to have repair hammers if you are a low level though.

This place is great for new stuff. Remember that caves respawn every three days so be sure to revisit if you need money or new equipment.

Also, use that site for any more questions as it has just about everything you need to know about the game.

Before long you will find that good gear is very easy to find in Oblivion. It's not as common on lower levels but after a while you'll have more than you know what to do with. Some can be found by just killing stuff in caves, and some quest rewards are sweet too. The quests from the Daedra statues usually have nice rewards, and the Dark Brotherhood quest line has some good ones too if being evil doesn't bother you. Also if you play with a shield, look up how to get the shield Escutcheon of Chorrol and do that quest. That shield was godly.

All you have to do is to pick the ring up , once your quest updates you can drop it straight away, you don't need to carry it with you.

As others have noted, loot drops in Oblivion are level-dependent. Good weapons/armor are not "rare" at lower levels, as one person said, they are non-existant.
