Hehe yeah it can be daunting at first, I'm doing well overall but I have a lot of experience with the series.

Try playing social instead of competitive, you'll have an easier time until you get better.

The other thing, and some people are against this(some people find this maneuver cheap, but it is in the game), but you can try the 2 piece maneuver. Hit B when close to your opponent, the resulting melee will stun your opponent, allowing you to easily take him out with a subsequent shotgun blast. Be careful not to overuse it though, because I know a lot of people don't consider it fair game when it comes to Shotgun battles, so see if your opponents use it first before doing so yourself. Regardless of your stance on it though, it is in the game so its up to you really if you want to use it...I sometimes do if I see the other team does too, it depends.

Practice is the most important.....good luck!

Edit

Suggestion to get better at the shotgun battles, stay calm and try to get in as close as possible before firing. There are different strategies but what I do is when I see the other guy fire too early, I move in close and fire....the closer you are the more pellets from the shotgun will hit your target. Make sure you also roll when needed to avoid getting surrounded.

Uh, no. I've never even heard of this technique, since I was a Horde and campaign player primarily, but anything is fair game in versus multiplayer. If something is that devastating, it needs something to balance it.

I like the Gears games, but I always sucked at the competitive MP against the people who really like to play it. I've considered giving it another go with the Gears of War Ultimate Edition but have yet to take the plunge.

@xisiuizado: People mostly use this in MP. When Gears 3 first came out people complained about it and they patched it to make it more difficult to perform.

I don't care either way honestly, if it is in the game then you have the right to use it, but was just explaining it to the TC that there is a group of people who will wine about it when you do, so not to he surprised if that happens. Also, you wont really improve your shotgun game if you use it all the time, but it can be helpful at first for beginners to get better at the game. In Gears UE it seems like it is slightly easier to perform than in Gears 3, but it is easy to avoid just don't get too close to your opponent.

@Alucard_Prime:
I wonder if it was why the King of the Hill matches were so hard during the first days of the beta? It took a little bit for me to get used to being one hit KO'd in online matches. I eventually started hanging back and providing cover fire for those taking the capture points, but wow, I was getting beat hard at first. All shotgun deaths. At least now I know why! :D
