I don't know if this was already posted, but it was mentioned in my Crim Law class and I thought I would share it with people here to see what you all think. I honestly can't imagine this happening, how can a game take over someone's life to this degree is beyond me...

ELYRIA - Daniel Petric shot his parents -- killing his mother -- because they wouldn't allow him to play the violent video game Halo 3, prosecutors told a judge at the boy's murder trial Monday.

The trial, on charges of murder and attempted murder, opened Monday for Petric, 17, of Brighton Township. He is being tried without a jury before Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge. (Update: The defense presents its case.)

Marvin Fong/Plain DealerDaniel PetricProsecutors are not seeking the death penalty because of Petric's age. In their opening state ments, prosecutors outlined this version of events surrounding the shooting:

In September 2007, Daniel, then 16, had sneaked out of his bedroom window to purchase the game at a store against his father's orders. When he returned home, his parents caught him with the game and took it from him. His father, Mark, a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, put the game in a lockbox in a closet where he also kept a 9mm handgun, according to prosecutors.

About a month later, on Oct. 20, 2007, Daniel used his father's key to open the lockbox and remove the gun and the game. The boy shot his parents, killing his mother and gravely wounding his father. As his father lay wounded, Daniel tried to place the gun in his father's hand.

Daniel fled after his sister and her husband arrived at the house, taking the Halo 3 game with him.

Mark and Susan PetricAlso on Monday, a tearful Mark Petric testified that his son came up behind him as he sat on the couch and said, "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."

Petric, 45, said he "expected a pleasant surprise" and closed his eyes. Then his head went numb. As the blood poured from a bullet wound in his head, he realized his wife, Susan Petric, 43, was lying dead on a nearby loveseat, shot in the head, arms and chest.

Petric said his son shoved the gun into his hand saying, "Hey Dad, here's your gun. Take it."

Mark Petric broke down on the witness stand as he said he believes he survived the shooting only because his daughter and husband arrived at the house to watch an Indians game. He heard his son telling them they couldn't come inside.

"You guys shouldn't come in," Mark Petric recalled his son saying. "Mom and Dad had a big argument."

The couple, Heidi and Andrew Archer, testified they heard a moan - possibly their names being groaned - from inside the house, pushed their way in and found the elder Petric wounded and his wife dead. The elder Petric, through his shattered jaw, managed to say his son had shot him, while Daniel tried to blame his father.

Heidi Archer called 9-1-1 and then realized that Daniel had picked up the handgun that had been lying on the couch. Her husband took the gun from the boy, who gave it up without resistance.

The boy ran out of the house and fled in the family van. He was caught by Wellington police a short time later, the Halo 3 game still on the front seat.

Daniel showed little emotion throughout the trial except when his mother's autopsy photos were flashed on a large screen. He bowed his head and stared at his hands for about 20 minutes while the photos were discussed.

Petric was allowed to visit his son in jail over the past year. He said his son has apologized. "Dad, I'm so sorry for what I did to Mom, to you and to the family," Daniel said, according to his father. "I'm so glad you are alive."

"You're my son," Petric responded. "You're my boy."

He said his wife and their son had a very close relationship.

"He was always her little boy," Petric told the judge.

Heidi Archer said the family has forgiven her brother and want him to come home because the family cannot heal until they are all together.

Daniel's lawyer, James Kersey, gave a short opening statement. He said his client had been under great stress at the time of the shooting because of a snowboarding accident that resulted in a severe staph infection. It left Daniel with such severe spinal damage that the slightest injury could leave him paralyzed.

Daniel was homebound for a year with nothing to do but watch television and play video games, Kersey said. It was during that time that he became fascinated with the Halo series and would play them for hours at friends' houses. His father forbade the games, saying that were too violent and sexually explicit.

Epically sad, and insanely stupid. The moral of the story? Parents need to start beating the crap out of their kids again - and using better hiding spots for their guns.

I'm just going to higlight something that needs to happen before more cases like this happen. It's not the first time we've heard of people actually killing other people over videogame rage. It should never happen, never.

His father forbade the game saying they were violent and sexually explicit? Halo? The blood is green for crying out loud. Ironic that this all caused by a game that was only rated mature so the sales would be better. Everyone knows that Halo is Teen at worst.

*Edit: Btw, his minister father has a gun? At New Life Assembly do the preach turn the other cheek or thou shalt lock and load.

That is not the point of the story. Either way, as a father, the man had a right to ban the game in his own house, no matter the rating nor the color of the blood.

This, is quite sad, but the thing is is that everyone, as usual, are going to blame videogames for being violent and should be made 21+ when really the kid had some serious mental issues and proably hung out with the wrong crowd.

As much as one may want to blame Bungie, this, as with any video game-related deaths, can only be blamed on the perpetrator. There always must be something deeply wrong with the person if they are going to resort to such action over just a video game. Hope he never sees the light of day again and that his relatives wish he was never born. Even loved ones can turn if need be.

Sorry for that family's lost. Thats a interesting case. But again media violence will probably be the one to blame. There's so much more deeper problems to look at though. The Father a preacher, obviously strict in censoring his children's life style, yet owns a gun himself... hmmm. It seems the family is trying to hide who they really are. Church family's always try to create a better image of themselves, with out any real change. The father should be understanding the his kid is not a little boy anymore. And maybe since he has to lessen his outdoor activities, give him freedom to play games that a normal kid should play at his age.

The real problem isn't the media. It's parents not giving the tools to make right choices to there children. Teach your children through example. Tell them why you don't think they should. Then back off. Let them make there own choices. And if you treat them as a mature adult. Guess what?!! They might just grow into one.

Halo games to violent and sexually explicit? Parents may be a bit too strict or just ill informed.

Either way, that kid is insane and that would most likely be his defense.

Complete agreement. I would add that whenever something like this happens, my first instinct is to blame the parents. I'm guessing that this kid has shown signs of needing psychiatric and psychological help before this incident. But who knows for sure. That is just the pattern I have noticed with all the school shootings and what not.

Doesn't everyone deserve the right to feel safe? There's nothing wrong with owning a gun, as long as your responsible and competent enough to own it. It was locked in a box. The son stole the key. Did it say that the father flaunted his gun around or wore it to Sunday worship?

Someone is dead, that by definition says that the gun was not properly secured. My .45 is in a safe that has a combination lock. My observation is that this is a man of very little faith if he needs a gun. You know, walk through the valley of death and fear no evil and that sort of stuff? How good is your religion if your Lord needs 180 grains of explosively propelled lead as a backup plan?

I would only kill my parents over Bioshock or Fallout 3. Maybe Gears of War 2. I would feel more sorry for this family but ignorant ministers with guns aren't cool. Let the boy have his Halo 3.

You are correct but anytime a kid can get a key to a locked gun, then the key is obviously not in a secure enough location. I also believe part of the blame does lie with the parents as well for the reasons stated in other posts in this thread. Does that mean I would forgive the little brat? Absolutely not. Never forget nor forgive and I would have nothing to do with him afterwards. That's just me though, maybe I'm a little harsh but I feel forgiveness is not the way to go. I know the father publicly forgave his son for this but how much do you want to bet that was for the benefit of the press? This avoids any criticism he'll receive from the public because we know the media would condemn him otherwise. This way the media is going to provide criticism to the video game industry and unjustly so I might add.

The same as, "God helps those who help themselves". Owning a gun doesn't mean you don't have faith in God, it means you don't have faith in your fellow man. Trust me, fellow man has given more then enough cause to own a gun and justifiably so. Not everyone plays by the same rules (religion) as you do. Therefore have no problem invading your home.

OK, I didn't see this here in Bogota-Colombia, yet gives me the creeps. This guy must have some serious mental issues, 'cause it's not normal under any circumstances that you shoot your parents just for not letting ypu get your hand on a videogame.

I really don't get why there's people that let themselvses to be carried away for a game. I don'tknow whether they're plain stupid or have their issues. If you're a reasonable person, there's no way a game could change you behavior in such a way as to do damage on someone else. Really sad story and I feel sorry for this dude and his family. Think before doing.
