I, like many of you here, love achievements and think they're one of the most fresh and motivating additions to gaming in countless years.

The Xbox 360 has been fabulous to me as a whole and I feel a very personal and satisfying connection with my gamertag at this point, one that I would like to carry over to MS's next console.

I liked the original Xbox, but was a PS2 fan as well. This time around, the 360 has had an incredible amount of quality games that achievements make that much more satisfying to play. In fact, beside the class N64 and PS2 games I find it difficult to play games lacking achievements at this point.

However, one of the greatest parts of the achievement system is the insurance your records will always be tracked and the continuity.

Something that popped into my head recently is my hope that our gamertag, profiles and gamerscore is carried completely in-tact to the next generation. Perhaps update or alter the system, but keep all our records from the 360 era. Perhaps put an icon next to achievements from the 360 and (720?) to differentiate them.

Have you guys wondered about this as well? And if so, what do you think?

I think it's probobly going to. For instance when you had a gamertag on the original xbox, and transfered it to the 360, you got a free gamerpic for it. As for the achievement thing, yeah, I can't play anything besides 360 games just because there aren't achievements.

Obviously all gamertags will be transferable to the next generation of consoles. Gamerscores will probably be transfered as well, if not then who really cares? The only gamerscore I'm ever aware of is my own anyway.

I personally think that achievements won't go away.  It is a method of proving "yea, I beat that" instead of telling your friends you beat it without any evidence.  It's a good system, makes you feel as though you've made permanent progress in a game and that is something I think and hope that Microsoft will continue this onto their next system.

With that said, I would like it if they would provide rewards for those points, whether it be themes or pictures or more in game content.  It seems that that is the way things are progressing, but I would like to see more of that.  Reward your customers for not only buying your product, but for playing it as well!

I can't remember where, but I explicitly remember reading an article a while back that confirmed that Microsoft would carry over gamers' gamertags and achievements to their next Xbox console release, and I'm glad it's going to happen. I agree with all of you and the fact that achievements are so innovative and significant that they probably wouldn't go away; the fact that they will most likely (or definitely in the case of the article I read) be seamlessly transferred to the next generation of Xbox is great. /thread
