So I picked up a 360 today (yay me!), and opted for the 20 gig bundle with M:UA and Forza2. So I plug it, and tells me the specs, and lo and behold! I have 9.8 GB of free space on my "20 GB HDD". Obviously it's not all in software used to operate the 360, since they have a bare-bones model without any HDD at all. Not even my computer came with ten gigs taken up.

Mine came with about 6-7 gigs filled up. Yours might be preloaded with demos or something. Also I used the clear cache code and that got me another 1-2 gigs of space, that might help you out.

Yeah it has a partitioned cache for games, and yours is most likely loaded with demos, videos and whatnot.

I bought the premium 1 year ago and it came with 14 gigs of space and that was after I deleted all the stuff I didn't want. I think they did a harddrive of that size that they discontinue but I dunno, I might have something in on it that I need to delete anyone have the same problem or know anything about this?

The Backwards Compatibility takes up most of the space. Its a shame Microsoft forces people to have it.

By forces you to have it do you mean, put it on your 360 or it is undeletable?

The newer Xbox 360's come with videos, demos, and arcade games. Deleting these will free up your hard drive. Don't forget that dashboard themes and gamer pictures also take up hard drive space. You'll never have a full 20gb free because there are system files and other essentials for using your Xbox that are already on the hard drive.

After yo delete the demos and crap the max you can have is 13.9, everything else is reserved for the dashboard updates, backwards compatibility patches, system data, etc. Its pretty much space Microsoft reserved so they have space for you to put there updates. Think of it how a computer harddrive has X amount of Gigs but Windows takes up X of that amount and you can't do jack about it.

So, if the system is using 6GB of hard drive space for system files how does the arcade version of theX360 operate?!? It doesn't have a hard drive.

That 6 gigs is for online updates, Arcade with no HDD can't connect to the internet so no internet and no need for space for the Live data, cache files, updates, and whatever else goes into it. Thats why Xbox Live requires the HDD.

Good point. Which makes you wonder why Microsoft feels the need to package a 120 GB HD with the elite package.

yeah 13gb free is standard on the 20gb drive. the other 7gb is used for the system. it basically stores updates and alot of the games benifit from slightly better performance by using the hard drive. so its reserved for the system basically stopping ya from filling it up then having ur xbox run into problems or slowing down because the space it needs aint there as ya used it for downloads. i wouldnt really feel like your ripped off or anything it acutally helps you. and your going to struggle at the moment to fill your drive anyways unless ya rip loads of cds to your machine and or donwload and never delete ya demos

My HD had about 14 gigs after I deleted everything that it came with. This troubled me at first, but I don't really use all that space anyway.
