I am bored in Iraq and was thinking about some ideas for the next Xbox that I would like to see. While this post may seem pointless please feel free to state your thoughts to keep some of my time overseas occupied.

First off, HD DVD lost the format war. But, Old scholl DVDs have presented the 360 with a storage problem. For the next box, I think that M$oft should keep the manufacturing capability in place to put HD DVD drives in the new consoles, and print all of their games the HD DVDs.

Ok, so the storage problem would be solved. Then people would say, "But I want to watch HD movies on my xbox, WAAHHHH". Well you could with xbox live, continue with the direction they are going with the download service, and put a hard drive on every xbox. The multiple sizes would not bother me, sell one version with a good size drive, and a 20 gig like they do now for less money.

Memory card WTF? Get rid of those things. The detachable hard drive is great, but large. I have a memory card to move my profile between my two boxes and to friends houses if I do not bring my box. But let everyone use a regular usb drive.

Last, do not build any bottlenecks in to the system. Processor, memory, and GPU should be over adequate for the time that it is released. The 360 uses an ATI gpu, right? So it seams like the next one might too, and because of that we may see something like a quad-core AMD processor in there. Their parts are generally cheaper, and preffered by many PC gamers.

Please do not turn it in to a F*ing wii. If I wanted one of those, I would buy one, they cost like twenty dollars. Keep that silly crap on the live arcade and sell a peripheral maybe, but in my opinion, the wii is 95% lame. The other 5% is Mario Kart, but even that is not worth the trip to the store to get a wii for me.

Well that is my rant. ender707 out.

HD-DVD? I'm not so sure that's a plausible idea. Considering that nobody makes them anymore I doubt that M$ would try using a dead format especially since the "Next" Box is a couple of years away.

I like everything but the HD-DVD. It's time to suck it up and go Blue Ray.

More room to make games is never a bad thing.

The Next Box had better be better built and not up and died of something similar to RROD. Microsoft take your time with the Third Xbox don't rush it! Have only one edition of the console next time? The Core was a bad idea.

Seriously though, I don't want IR. The Wii is great and fun, but sometimes I just like laying down with my controller, I don't want to always be in front of my screen pointing...

What I want in the next Microsoft console:

8-Core CPU (with 8 dedicated pipelines, each @ 2.6 GHz)
4-Core GPU (512 MB dedicated VRAM)
2 GB DDR3 RAM
250 GB HDD (upgradeable with any 2.5" HDD, though 250 GB is quite sufficient)
1080p standard output via HDMI 1.4 (the future HDMI...), although SD also available
< $30/year online service with dedicated servers (or optimized P2P architecture)
Blu-Ray Disc Drive
Built-in Wifi (N) + Bluetooth
Super quiet fans and runs at 20-40C while playing games
99% reliability rate
Only 1 SKU option
$500 launch price
Identical designed controllers to Xbox 360, but built-in rechargeable batteries with ~75 hour life and 10 year life span (under normal usage)
Upto 8 controllers connected at once
Ability to have different colour LEDs for each controller (selected in preference menu)
Jet black and chrome finish for console
Ability to record gameplay video straight to the HDD, or take screenshots (dedicated controller button)
Use external flash drives as memory unit
...and a bunch of other awesome things

What he said:

However I'm guessing 4Gig of R.A.M would be more suited for 3yrs down the line (but I know nothing).

8 controllers probably not necessary (but who knows... especially with what the Wii generation has done for gaming). I do like the idea of L.E.D customization!

The ability to record gameplay straight to the HDD!! Why has this not been implemented yet!!!!!!!!!!!

No joke, but I don't think it would go to well with our 20gb HDD's lol. I am tired of Dazzle though.

Here's a better idea. Microsoft, Do not manufacture the next XBOX internally. You've got billions of dollars, outsource the console manufacturing to a well respected and reliable hardware vendor so that you do not have a RROD version 2.

- 2 disc drives (so you can seamlessly switch between games or a game and DVD) - Blu-Ray drive (that also plays CDs, DVDs and HD-DVDs) - Fully backwards compatible to all Xbox 360 games - Backwards compatible to some original Xbox games (Halo, Fable, KOTOR, stuff like that) - 250GB Hard Drive - The same exact controller (and you can still use your 360 controllers) - Faster console (games played list and achievement icon pictures pop up instantly) - Built in Wi-Fi - Ability to put game saves, game demos, gameplay videos, downloaded movies, etc. on an external flash drive

I guess you guys did not read the article on c.net about Xbox360 possibly being the last console for Microsoft. They have lost quite a lot of money over the entire thing and might want to stick with games development and business solutions. I hope for our sakes the article is not correct in the long run.

Most of the ideas submitted are pretty good. This one is already done though. Some apps on phones and iPods can check who's online using Wi-Fi.

Couldn't agree more. I bought a 360 last fall and I have already had two rings of death breakdowns. I bought the 360 over the PS3 for one reason - the games. if and when Microsuck comes out with a new console, the hardware will be at the cutting edge. I would like to see a 250gb hard drive minimum, and they definitely need to let another company build it. Going with HD-DVD won't happen. It will definitely be Blu Ray. Also, they will repeat the strategy they used with the 360. They will continue development to a point where they can launch about one year prior to the next gen Playstation. Then they will rely on exclusive titles to keep their console in the forefront.

Blu-Ray or another nextgen format that doesnt excist yet should be implanted. HD-DVD is death, and Sony uses Microsoft's software for their new mobile phones so why not use Blu-Ray?

Throw away the memory cards and use an open system that allows USb sticks.

Free online, xbox live is great but you cant compeet with something that is free and only a little bit worse. Besides nextgen Sony will have even better online.

Not sure what else to thing off since we arent ready for a new console yet. There isnt much that this generation is missing so making a new one is pointless for now.

Well, at least I can provide comic relief.

And, you also have to think about industry trends. Yes, all of that is likely for a 2011 console - and a price of $500 (upto $600) is extremely feasible. Do you realize how cheap all of that will be in 3 years?

I'd like to have the ability to take pictures and record gameplay in every game and let it be saved in a section within your 360's dashboard.

And with an internet wire connected to your PC, you can upload it to the computer and show others. It would be the most revolutionary thing on the planet if it happened.

I have the best idea... r u ready?

Make reliable consoles

RJLateralus

trust me they will. I know you may have had alot of problems, and so have I. But believe me...MS has suffered through this more than any one consumer has. All the public relations problems it has brought, all the money they had to throw at the issue....believe me this has been a HUGE headache for them. For that reason you can bet the farm AND your wife that it wont happen again. The xbox brand is very capable of making reliable consoles. The first xbox was a reliable beast and very advanced technologically when it first came out. The next one will be even more reliable than that, they will make sure of it.

For that reason you can buy an xbox 3 with a clear concious. Say what you want about MS but they didnt get to where they were by making many mistakes. And when they have made mistakes they tend to be really good about learning from them. So that wont even be an issue next generation.

The next xbos will DEFINITELY have blu ray. There is no reason why it wont. Anyone who thinks its not possible, well im not even going to waste my time explaining why its more than just possible.

The next xbox will probably have a CPU even better than a quadcore. When the 360 came out, dual core processors were just starting to catch on, and they put a TRIPLE core in there. Quadcore is so 2007...you can bet by next generation it will be something really sweet.

It will probably have one gig of ultra fast memory and a state of the art graphics card. And maybe, just maybe, some kind of parallel processing capabilities for AI. But that last one might be too much to ask for.

The hard drive will be smaller, and will probably be around 120 GB standard.

All in all it will be really sweet.

they should make the new xbox have a different name, and it should play the new holo-disks they came out with in Abu Dhabi, and then, they should make it print stuff, and dispense almonds, and it should consist mainly of bacon

I agree that the Dashboard system should remain largely unchanged, and that the drive will most likely be blu-ray. Also, the 360 controller is so good it does not need any real changes to its design.

As far as video recording goes, I think that the console itself could do what Halo 3 does, and just keep a certain amount of content recorded, so if you want to save clips to share, you just find it in the saved video sessions, and export it to a PC in WMV format, or share it on Xbox Live like Halo 3.

Backwards compatability would be a MUST for 360 titles. Original Xbox games would need an emulator, and by the time the Next box comes out it might not matter to enough people.

I do not think Xbox Live will ever be free, but you get what you pay for. I feel like I get way more than my $50/years worth of good online support. I did not even cancel my subscription while I am here in Iraq, even though I can not play on live.

What I want in the next Microsoft console:

8-Core CPU (with 8 dedicated pipelines, each @ 2.6 GHz)
4-Core GPU (512 MB dedicated VRAM)
2 GB DDR3 RAM
250 GB HDD (upgradeable with any 2.5" HDD, though 250 GB is quite sufficient)
1080p standard output via HDMI 1.4 (the future HDMI...), although SD also available
< $30/year online service with dedicated servers (or optimized P2P architecture)
Blu-Ray Disc Drive
Built-in Wifi (N) + Bluetooth
Super quiet fans and runs at 20-40C while playing games
99% reliability rate
Only 1 SKU option
$500 launch price
Identical designed controllers to Xbox 360, but built-in rechargeable batteries with ~75 hour life and 10 year life span (under normal usage)
Upto 8 controllers connected at once
Ability to have different colour LEDs for each controller (selected in preference menu)
Jet black and chrome finish for console
Ability to record gameplay video straight to the HDD, or take screenshots (dedicated controller button)
Use external flash drives as memory unit
...and a bunch of other awesome things

Look closer into the prices/trends of computers - not just today's local flyer. Everything I listed, although while some may see it as farfetched, is completely possible in 2011 for $500.

The price of Blu-Ray players (ROM) will be significantly cheaper in 3 years, especially if it's widely adopted by the market. Plus, quad-core GPUs are already in development, and although there's no offcial release for any, expect to see them release within the next 1-2 years. By the time the next Xbox launches, again, it'll be much cheaper.

You also have to consider the production cost per unit of a launch console. When both the Xbox 360 and PS3 were released, MS and Sony, respectively, had a loss on each unit. This, however, is offsetted through accessories, software, licenses, et cetera. So even if the console costs $700, $500 may be the equilibrium price.

Morever, look at what a console is. A machine that will likely stay static in hardware for a good 5-7 years. Unlike a PC, it's not practical for yearly upgrades. To withstand develper demands, a console actually needs to be more advanced than any (actually, just most) PC(s) on the market. Was the cell processor available to purchase (widely) at the time of PS3's release?

I'm astonished of all this ignorance I'm seeing. Honestly, has no one used their mind? Sometimes I think I posted "16 GB DDR4 RAM" and "20 Blu-Ray drives" which makes everyone go nuts. Please, people - everything listed can be a reality.

(This isn't targeted solely at you, cupcake.)

The only thing that is really off with your list is the 8 core CPU. What would all of the cores do? Would there be a performance gain worth it, or would developers have a hard time with it like the Cell processor? Would it be worth the added cost? Have any PC games really utilized 4 cores yet?

The consoles use a GPU that is really good for the time. But it could add longevity to the console if instead of putting one GPU in the machine, they put 2 of those GPUs in there, in an SLI or Crossfire setup. Or a Dual GPU card like the Nvidia 9800 GTX-2, which I think is different from what a "dual core" GPU is. That is my strategy with my PC graphics cards. When my 8800 GT does not keep up with games so well, I can buy another one and use SLI rather than buy the next $400-500 video card.
