Treyarch developed World at War and the next game will be either by them or the 3rd studio Activision announced. Obviously Infinity Ward have just released Modern Warfare 2.
Honestly, the whole WWII aspect of first person shooting games has been extremely over-produced in these past years and I've loved how they've gone towards Modern Warfare. I've heard that they're still going to make another Modern Warfare (and for those who have completed the campaign for MW2 know why it would make sense).

Modern Warefare is on it's way to being the new WWII. The only wars that haven't been overdone yet are pre-WWII wars such as WWI and the Civil War. Also, Vietnam hasn't been done much for obvious reasons. Oddly enough though the Korean War hasn't even been touched.

I thnk people saying they overuse the WW II are just skipping on moden war games, Modern Warfare, Battlefield Bad Company, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six (although not war it has a modern setting and weapons :P) FarCry and others like these examples
ive heard vietnam. but really all they can do is ww2 and on..i mean comeon if they did the civil war the whole game would be like "master the prowess of the brown bess" and it would take like 3 minutes to reload after one shot and youd have to like add gunpowder and stuff...it would just be a total fail.
I think the main problem with WW2 games is that they don't actually represent the big picture of a war, instead you only see like 7 soldiers from your side at any given time, and I know that some battles are fought this way but a big battle will always be welcomed by gamers
