The Orange Box: Half life 2 help

Alright, so I got the orange Box and am really enjoying it, but I'm stuck on Half Life 2.

I'm on the river boat and have just come to a part where you come out of a big tunnel, hang a right, go up a ramp (pulling a U-turn), hang a right, pass under a bridge and then come to a T-junction. On the right there is some wreckage where two ships collided. On the left there is a big dam. I can't find a way past.

How do I beat this part? I can't find a switch, a ladder, nothing. Help!

No, I'm past that bit. I'm almost at the end of the riverboat section. The helicopter is chasing me.

Did you pass the part where you need to get out and blow up the explosive barrels behind the container? it makes a path for you to go through and jump towards the sewer? Do you have the gun for the boat yet?

Not trying to be rude or anything.

when in doubt, get out and wander around a bit.

just be sure to get back in the boat before you go through the open dam gate. i had to restart that level because of that.
