I have very recently bought a used 360, which is out of warranty, and I am naturally concerned about the RRoD problem. While I know it probably won't strike me (the console worked fine until now), I was wondering how often it occurs.

I searched through the forum and saw no similar thread/poll, so I'm sorry if this poll has been done before.

If you answer yes, how old was the console when it happened?

I've had it 4 times, however even though I've usually expressed my pain & suffering to which I endured through those movie watching maniac 4 months, even I now have grown completely sick of even thinking about it now, much less going into depth on this forum once again.

Wow, sounds rough. Hopefully it won't happen again though.

Best of luck to you.

Having the system standing verticaly reduces heat production because the GPU can cool better meaning there are fewer chances of getting a RRoD.

Had my xbox 2 years. After just a few months I started having problems with it (shoulda sent it back then but I'm a lazy so and so). At first, after i put a game in, it would tell me to insert the game into an xbox 360 (identity crisis or what?). This started happening more and more until eventually I had to sit for half an hour, inserting and ejecting the game fifty times before it would load. After a particularly long session it finally happened. I was kinda glad it did though because at least I could get it repaired for free as the warranty extends to 3 years with the RROD. Warning to everyone: If your console ever has the above problem, get it checked out. It'll only get worse!

Anyway, back to topic. I have a friend who repaired his RROD himself with a kit he bought from E-bay consisting of a tool to open the unit and some plastic parts. Now it works fine. If it does happen, chances are you can fix it yourself and you've got nothing to lose by trying because the warranty is no good by now anyway. Of course if that doesn't work, just be be glad of the recent price drop. You can pick up an arcade model for next to nothing now as you've already got a hard drive etc.

Good luck anyway, hope it never happens! :)

Had my console for 2 years before it RROD. Happened only once and got a new one in return. New one is past the one year warranty, tried to get an extended service warranty for all other issues but waited too long past the one year mark. So now I'm out on the ocean alone hoping against any unforeseen problems. BTW, I know many people fixing, selling, and buying a new Elite with the latest manufacturing date only to have it (the ELITE) RROD. Hit and miss, probability, Murphy's Law, Choas Theory . . . take your pick. If its gonna happen there's nothing you can do about it!

I've had 3 360's so far and 2 of them have RROD'd me. The first was a arcade edition purchased shortly after the 360 was released. It gave me 3 lights, but would often start up if left alone for a while. About a year later I bought a Elite to replae it and after 10 months or so it 3 lighted me and never restarted. Thanks to a replacement plan I bought with it I replaced it with another Elite. So far, so good.

Right now 2 out of the 7 people I know with 360's currently have a RROD.

Unfortunately, no I haven't gotten the RROD.

That's weird why is it bad that you haven't gotten RROD you might ask?

My system got an E74 error that isn't covered in the extended 3 year warranty. So basically, I have a system that performs like a RROD machine (doesn't work) but the kicker is that I have to pay 100 for repairs (which I'm not going to do) - so yeah, E74 is the new RROD.

I didn't get the 3 rings, just the one on the bottom right along with an E74 Error like the poster above me. Bought mine last September and it happened about two weeks ago so it was just under a year old and still under full warranty. Sent it in to MS and according to UPS I should be getting it back tomorrow. Don't know if I'm getting a repaired, refurbished or new unit.

Wow, there are some unlucky people here. I'm hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. I more or less know what to do should my 360 get caught on fire.

Still, it's interesting that there are more poll entries in "Yes" than in "No", I thought the failure rate was below 50%. There's still few entries to the poll though.
