Ok, I am kind of tired of all these threads about how goodlooking Killzone2 is and how Halo 3 is going to fail because of its graphics. There are more factors that decides how great a game looks. First off:

Models- Models are very important in a game, a great looking character is always a great looking character. I remember the days when HalfLife 2 just came out and i was amazed how great the characters looked. I couldnt stop thinking about how great they looked, I could actually find myself looking at the models instead of killing them wich cause me to die alot *Ravenholm* . Now we have a few games coming in a near future and the one I believe has the best models is ofcourse Crysis. I myself cannot play it, my uber computer clocks at 701Mhz(lol) but i will go over to my buddy's house just to look at the game and hopefully i will get to play it (YAY).

Animations- Animatoins are also a very important factor and addsto the feelofa game, which could in the end make a game more realistic. I believe we all have heard ofand seen a game called Killzone2. I were sceptic(sp?) about the game because of the first installement but Killzone2 amazed me, not because of models or texture(lol). It was the animations that blew me away, wich makes me wish I sometimes had a Playstation 3, which I will eventually get. The animations in this game are the best in any game I have ever seen, even better than Crysis in my opinion.

Scale- Sure a game can look really good sometimes, like Geras of War. But the problem with Gears of War is thatthegame is really tiny, you dont have the freedom to do as you wish. All you do in that game is following a path and chainsawing everything that moves. What if Gears would have been 10 times bigger or 100 times bigger. What if the game had maps that were10.000 miles wide. I think you know what I am talking about. Yep, Im gonnatalk about Lair. The game seems to be awesome andreally give you freedom to fly whereever you want to go. Freedom in a game is always a good thing. theres also another game that is supposed to have bigfights going on simultanious (sp?). I also heard in the trailer "In the beginning" That it wouldnt be the"graphics" (charactermodels) that would blew us away. It'sgoing to be the scale thats going toamaze peopleand I hope Halo3 does amaze us in that way.

Texture- Oh yeah, who doesnt love high-res-textures. Gears of War had high-res-textures, so why cant Killzone2 have that? Becausethe problem lies within the ram-memory. Even Gears has problems sometimes to display all the high-res-textures. Im just hoping that Uncharted wont have problems with the textures, becauseI think it could become a really funny game to play. We can also add that Rare always makes a good job with the textures, I just wanted to say that.

Framerate- What if Crysis onlycould run at 10 FPS? Everyone would just forget about Crysis because a game isnt going to be fun to play if it was 10FPS. A game looks better the more FPS there is. Its smoother. Some games needs to sacrifice framerates for making a game betterlooking in other areas. As an example that Halo 3 is going to be locked at 30FPS. Sure we always want more, why couldnt it have 60FPS?

Lightining- This is the last thing that I can think of that is included in "great graphics". It adds to the realism and adds to a gmes feel, a games atmosphere. Some games have awesome lightning (Crysis), som game have prerenderd lightning (Killzone2) and some games are just using something different ( Halo3 wich uses one object that lits everything up(the sun)).

Ok, this is what i wanted to say:A game cant have it all(except if its name is Crysis) because consoles cant handle the data. Maybe next-gen but not this gen. Some developers want to make a really greatlooking game and forgets all about the gameplay (Gears) and others keeps gameplay in mind and lower the standards in different areas just to make a game fun to play (Halo3). Its all about the gameplay, deep inside you know thats the thruth. For ten years ago everybody knew that. Nowadays , it seems like noone can remember that anymore. Why are developers making a game thats only 10 hours long? For ten years ago that would have been unlegal (sp?, lol). I just want game that is fun to play, I buy a game because of its gameplay, not because of the graphics.

I definately don't think graphics are everything. I mean my favorite game of all time is Castlevania: SotN. No great graphics. I'd take a game with great gameplay and replayability of graphics anyday. I mean graphics are great and everything but what's the point at looking at something pretty if the gameplay is bad enough you don't want to play.

a true gamer is in my opinion a person that appreciate (sp?) the game itself rather than buying it for its graphics, I mean thats what it is all about, to play games and as many as you can. If you prefer to have a game thats goodlooking than youre better off with a movie.

i agree with you! graphix arent everything. gameplay makes a game great. but i honestly must say graphix do put games ahead of others these days and (at times) evenalters my choice of which games to buy...

Can't deny the effect graphics have on our perception of modern games. Until of course those high-graphics game just flat out suck.

umm yeah there's a reason why gears has small maps on its own it's really hard to find someone hiding on some maps and are you saying that Killzone 2 don't have good textures nor any of the things you said man I'm a gamer I could care less if somebody told me that I'm not and yes graphics isn't everything but all the things you said textures, animations and all that still need graphics what you need is gameplay and halo 3 only has some difference to the first two

Your post doesn't seem to be anything to do with Halo3 @.@. I mean you said about HL2, Gears, Killzone2, and number of other games and developers. Not really sure what's your focus there.

I know one thing for sure. That Halo3's video in E3 shows too little about the game, especially the graphics range from really nice to crap. I can't tell what exactly Halo3's graphics will be like in general. The water effect and lighting are really nice though. I like Halo series is that it is accessible and I always felt I accomplished something cool in each chapter, not just goes from point A to point B.

Well, if Halo3 is indeed losing its touch, it is the final chapter anyway. And something else in the Halo universe will come up with something different and new kind of cool graphics. I kind of want to play as human/commander in Halo universe. And it will be cool to play in a dusty cracked buildings kind of environment, like Gears and Fallout3.

magicalclick

My intention wasnt to talk about Halo3 at all or not that much anyway. My post was all about how important Graphics seems to have become, it seems to have become even more important than the actual gameplay. I just wanted to say that Gameplay is everything, thats all.

Your whole post is void because of the following statement:

"Some developers want to make a really greatlooking game and forgets all about the gameplay (Gears)"

Are you serious? Spoken by a true gamer? PFFFFFFFFFFT I say!! Maybe your moms a true gamer....yeah I went there.

Lol, well thats what I think anyways. A campaign thats around 7-8 hours long and a multiplayer that seems to beall about glitches. I remember back in the old good days where campaigns were 15-20 hours long....

A true gamer would ignore the glitches and just enjoy the game, :P ...and while gears had a short campaign, it was a campaign I enjoyed playing through over and over again, which made up for the length.

But I get your point and it does become irritating to read all those posts complaining about very small details...such as graphics. It's also why I'm not such a huge fan of reviews in general, since they spend so much time going through these details, finding negative points that people would not have even noticed before reading them.

i dont really care about graphics, if i did, i would just buy a pc.....and the graphics on the console will keep getting betteras developers find new ways to exploit the console`s hardware and how much effort they put into the game....

But now you're talking about game length, not gamePLAY...two totally different things. Gears gameplay is awesome. But I will agree the singleplayer campaign was short. But in my opinion the multiplayer is where its at! Sure it has glitches...so does Halo 2, they worked most of the major ones out at this point and the game is hella fun. there is a dif between game length & gameplay. ;)

All I'm saying is that a game that is hyped so much and got so good reviews is supposed to be good too. in my opinion the game was too short and the story all around wasnt great at all. The only really good thing in the game was the chainsawgun, everything else was just mediocre. But the gamewas focused on awesome graphics instead. I believe that the game could have been much better if they (EPIC) just realised that we (Gamers) want games to play and not to watch (except CG movies in JRPG), so their main focus should have been the gameplay, story etc.

Hahaha, I may not know what one is exactly, but talking about graphics instead of gameplay... does that make you a "true gamer"?

I appreciate good graphics, but at the core I just want awesome gameplay. Graphics are only important to me if it keeps the game running smooth and you have no trouble seeing anything.

Graphicsa aren't everything. Gameplay and Replayablity usually win. CS 1.6 is good because of its fast paced shooting and its replayablity. WoW has the most suscribers and overwhelms the Live Service because Blizzard knows that not everyone has a good PC so they make it playable for everyone. Now for Consoles its a diffrent story because you are restricted on a console. Games are suppose to be good looking on next gen consoles but at the same time have a new way of playing. Gears proved that. Killzone 2 is just a regular fps to me. Nothing new about itand same goes with Halo 3. Now Call of Duty 4 is something new because they are ditching the WW2 gameplay and changing to modern making a whole new way of playing. Just something to think about!

well.  SOTN had amazing animation.  And it was a 2d game a pretty huge scale... so they couldn't do high-res or anything.    i think the game is beautiful though.

Animations: The animations in the game in question are a mix of physics and mo cap which fills the gap. Texture: Video ram isnt a proper for textures, hasnt been since AGP was announced how many millions of years ago? PS3 also has access to a HD which allows very quick loading so no matter how much texture ram it has itll do just as well as everyone else. Lighting: Actualy Killzone uses a differed rendering engine which allows for that highend lighting which standard XYZ ones dont. While no doubt itll use predone lighting in places like most games done, the impressive stuff was and is done in realtime. One of the reasons they took such an odd engine path.
