For all you achievement freaks out there what kind of achievements do you guys hate?

Personally I hate crazy multiplayer achievements. They make people play the game differently. That and those "Do something 1000 times" achievements. I can't stand those.

The Orange Box had the best achievements ever.

I can't stand achievements like Unreal Tournament 3 has... Seriously, I have yet to meet anyone who has anything close to 100 GS on that game. The most I've seen is 50.

I can't stand "Hidden Achievements" because they lack a sense of wanting to achieve something. Plus everyone jsut goes online and look them up, so they should just go ahead and list all of their achievements.

Achievements like "Play online when 1000 people are online" for games that have little to no online community. Also achievements like "Collect all the -insert item-".

Ya pointless achievements like that and the stupid "collect an insance amount of some stupid item that has no significance gameplay wise".

I like games where you can earn a good 400-500 points just by one playthrough. And have the rest be those ones that you will have to put a little extra work into it to get them.

COD 4 and Mass Effect are the only games I have played so far that do this well.

I completely agree. In GTAIV I hate the "Collect all the hidden packages" one. I myself am not going to bother with that, what's the point? It's not like it effects the gameplay in any significant way, it's just boring.

BIA: HH has some seriously stupid Achievements.Gearboxso obviously ran out of ideas and decided it was a good idea to put in game-play time Achievements. There are four, all to do with playing the game a certain amount of time for example:

OBSESSIVE:

While connected to XboxLIVE, play the game for once a day for 100 days

I mean seriously what is that all about? Still that is a fantastic game regardless of the crazyAchievements.

I agree with that one. However I wouldn't mind achievements for it if you got a small 5 pointer for every 10 pakages or something. That way you can atleast get like 15-30 GS just by finding them as you play the game.

Every secret achievement I have ever unlocked in a game, had nothing to do with the story. It's usually stuff like "Unlock this gun, and surprise its an achivement!" or "Surprise you got a 50 note combo!" (These aren't the actual achievements, but somewhat related.) Show me a few secret ones that hide spoilers, but if you do just be sure to tag them as spoilers and from what game so i don't ruin something for myself lol.

I hate games that ONLY have secret achievements, like Dynasty Warriors 6. And Guitar hero 3 has pretty hard and time consuming achievements, but at least that would be a little fun getting them.

I hate ones like that as well. I really enjoyed getting all the achievements in Viva Pinata, but the last one where you have to play for 50 hours was just annoying. Also, HATED DMC4 achievements, I have played through the game once and only have 60 points - just can't be bothered to get more!

I am also not a fan of online achievements because you get people who are just playing for those rather than playing for fun. I am a big fan of COD4 achievements.

I like games where you can get a good tally with one play through, then if you have enjoyed the game you can play again for the remaining ones like on a harder difficulty setting or something. I liked Bioshocks achievements because I got 800+ on first play through and the same with Assassins Creed, although I didn't want to play AC again to get the find 100 flags... YAWN!

i always thought the ones you get when completing a level was kinda pointless.. fair enough with 'in a certain time' or 'without losing a life' but just for a completing a level? isn't that why we play games anyway?

Some collection achievements are not as bad as others. For instance Assassin's Creed might have 420 flags to find, but it is broken up into 4 achievements to make it easier to get rewarded, though the downside is that collecting the flags has no real point in the game.

In Crackdown you have a massive number of orbs to find - 800 in all, but there is a point to collecting them because each orb improves your character - so this isn't just pointless collecting. While you may not need to find all 800 for your character, you will want to collect atleast half of these to have a good agent.

I don't like multiplayer achievements which require X number of kills with a specific weapon. I'd much rather have one achievement for 1,000 kills than 10 that require 100 kills each with one weapon.

I like to get around 600GS+ from one complete playthrough of the game. Some games are just so tight with giving out achievements that you can finish the game and still have less than 100GS

Collection is fine for me, as long as it's under 50 things (COD4, NOT GTAIV).

Things that require multiple playthroughs are a bit annoying as well (be 100% good, then be 100% evil), but they do add depth for me.

I was recently griping about this in my blog, but since you ask... What pisses me off is when you beat a game on Hard, but it doesn't give you the achievements for beating it on Easy. What the hell is the point of making me go back and play the game again on an easier difficulty? Stupid.

MP achievements that require you to do something many times with a certain weapon, etc... When a game doesn't give you the easy difficulty achievements when you beat the game on hard... I pretty much agree with everything that has been said in this board, good to know we gamers are in the same page.

I'd have to agree with this one. It's one of the things that turned me off to the first Far Cry.

ch2423

I recently beat the first story in Far Cry on the medium difficulty, only to find out that I didn't get the achievement for doinig it on Easy too. I was not pleased. GRAW is the same way. Speaking of GRAW...

i think it was one of the GRAW games, where you had to be 1st in the leader boards.

uwiwami

I can't believe I didn't remember this one. Quake, and I think FEAR, do have similar achievements. Really, why the hell is some developer going to make some achievement that you have to be the best in the world to get? And knowing how leader boards work, the top 20 probably aren't the best in the world; they're just guys who spent 16* hours jumping through a hoop to boost up to the top. Stupid.

* I didn't pull that 16-hour figure out of my ass. I was checking out the Team Fortress leaderboards recently, where I'm pretty highly ranked. I looked up the guy on top (who's now #2). Part of his skill leaderboards ranking includes over 6,000 teleports. If you figure in the teleporter recharge time, that's over 16 hours of mindlessly going through teleporters.

I hate really easy ones. Like on king kong, there's 5 achievements I think and each one's worth like 200g each and they're not even hard to get. It makes it look like completing king kong is harder than completing GTA, CoD4 and DMC4 together!

I don't bother with the find items achievements like audio diaries in Bioshock and flags in Assassins Creed. If I see one I'll pick it up but I'm not the type of person who isn't happy until he's found them all. That would be torture.

I actually really liked Assassin's Creed's achievements. If I came cross, say, 27 of the flags in one area out of the 30 needed I would try to find the last 3. But if I needed 40 out of 50 I just wouldn't bother.

mass effect, i love the game to death (7 hours in), but i glanced over the achievement guide, and you have to beat the game a minimum of 3 times to get 100% and you have to explicitly plan your play throughs! That's no fun! iThat's one thing I like about oblivion over mass effect: you can get all achievements in 1 play through

i agree. for someone like me who doesnt play online all the time or even someone without it, its not the fairest method. plus, theyre usually really boring anyway. "Reach level 30" "revive 100 times" i would rather have a sense of accomplishment, like the little rocket man. that is a sweet achievement

Anything that is a time-consuming, boring, repetitive grind that often requires the same thing over and over, whether it's multiplayer or single-player. Stuff like beating GTA IV's pigeons and winning all the online races, Soul Calibur IV's "Transcend History" where you have to put in hours of mindless gold grinding, Gears of War's multiplayer kill achievements, and about half the stuff in DMC 4. Also anything that requires playing the game through more than two times (Mass Effect, DMC4) and any multiplayer achievement that changes the way people play.
