Hi

I like to put my xbox horizontially because that is how i believe

cd-roms work, ofcourse we all know that ps2/3 and 360

can stand up vertically, yet i have fear of launching xbox games vertically(with those failure rates)

that the cd would some how drop within the console, or it would jam and shatter inside.

can any one add any input on which position is better, surely vertically takes less space

but it seems dangerouse too

Well you get more ventilation I believe when it's vertical, less chance of overheating. I only put my console in verticle postition and have been for over a year. So far, i've had no problems.

Dang now I'm curious which runs cooler. The only fact that I am aware of is the danger of knocking your 360 over from a vertical position. Must research :)

Only yesterday I read a rapport on redlights saying that the 360 has a better chance of not getting it when it's vertical. But I keep my 360 horizontal aswell, it can easily play DVD's when it's vertical but if it drops then you do have a problem.

how can it be cooler horizontally??? have you felt the side of the machine that's facing down? it's hot!!! anyways, i've kept my elite vertical ever since i got it, nothing's happened to it, and it stays cooler than it does when horizontal (tested to see which was better one day)

I fear both horizontal and vertical positions. If I have it horizontal the bottom of the 360 gets too hot and would cause problems like games freezing cause of the overheating. If I have it vertical then there is the chance of it falling down and if that happens, I won't be able to use my product replacement plan warranty which I bought from best buy cause it won't be hardware failure. So i'm screwed both ways.

I have one of the new pro hdmi 360's and the bottom still gets too freaking hot when I have it horizontal but seems to work cooler and better when vertical. The only thing I can do is hope that no big earthquakes happen so my 360 won't tip over and break since I have it standing vertical right now. Sometimes I wonder why I even bought prp warranty cause the console seems to work perfect for me if I have it standing vertical and since I have it vertical the only way my 360 can break is if it falls and prp warranty won't cover that. sucks. :(

This is NOT caused by the normal use of the console. It's caused by misuse or mishandling.

Both ways have a chance at getting it.

This expert says it fails for many different reasons, but technically it gets more ventilation vertically:

I agree..you have a slimmer chance of your precious 360 overheating in the vertical position..and I'm pretty sure if CDs were to fall inside the gaming system then microsoft would have a more serious problem than the rrod..lol

Xbox support cites playing vertical as a potential cause of failure. It's one of the diagnostic problems they asked me when my Xbox(s) died, so I'm assuming that it's not a good thing to do. Of course, I'm on my third Xbox and I've never played vertically, so who knows?

Thats exactly what I did too. I put mine verticle when I first got it, and I could play for 5 hours and there would be little heat coming off of the elite. but one day i decided to put it horizontal just too see how it was. and after only 1 and a half hours of playing i felt the bottom of it and it was really freakin hot. and if you think about it, when its verticle it has more room to let heat escape, but horizontal there is more surface area touching another surface..which equals heat, not good. keep it verticle

I would keep the console vertical. They may say the console runs cooler horizontally but I beg to differ. Run your box for 3 hours vertically and horizontally and you'll see what I mean. Horizontal position blocks two of the vents on the side and the underside is considerably hotter than what it is when vertical. I have gone though 4 360s, longest running ones were vertical. Also, the best intercooler (Intec with glow) requires that you stand it up. I would suggest spending the $20 on the intercooler it really does keep it cool and the lights are pretty neat. A technical review says the Intec cooler keeps your box around 4 degrees cooler. Pretty significant

completeley true nd i can tell you y... If you look at the bottom of the 360 it has ventilations holes on the botom which cannot allow heat to escape when the 360 is positioned vertically.

True, but you as well have ventilation holes on both sides of the console so when you lay it horizontally they are almost completely blocked. Either way you're gonna be getting some ventilation cut off.

Yep, just take your pick: Trap a big portion of heated side or small? Go figure.

Unless you do what I did and put 1 inch rubber grommets under it (horizontal position)

I've always had mine vertical, but one day I went to a friends house, and I had to lay it vertical because it wouldnt fit anywhere else. By the end the bottom of the console was verry hot. So i'm gonna say vertical

I keep my PS3 and 360 vertical because they get more air circulation/ventilation going and they look better that way. I also keep them out in the open so that they don't get choked up in head in a tight space like some people keep them to save space. Therefore, vertical is better for better ventilation and the game won't fall and get trapped in the system.

For those who must keep their 360s/PS3s horizontal, if you don't want your consoles to overheat, then go and buy a laptop fan that you put under the consoles. It works great and keeps them cool indefinetly. It's the safer way to go if you want to keep your consoles horizontal.

Horizontal forever, no problems.
