I posted a couple times on here about upconverting my regular DVD's and some people said I needed the VGA cable, So I went today to pick it up. Hooked it up and went to the display setting, I set it to the 1080x768 setting, or which the first one is. I tried every setting and it looked like I was looking through a plastic haze on my screen. I tried a game, looked bad, I tried adjusting my TV settings, Then I put a regular DVD and it looked the same as before. I put the DVD in my HDDVD drive. So why is the picture like this?

Dude, the VGA outputs 1080p. You have to use the highest setting on the 360 which is 1920x1080 which is 1080p. 1080x768 is not even a proper res. supported on the 360. Also, you equally need a HDTV that can display 1080p. Games don't support 1080p, only 1080i as well.

Please, just shut up. You have NO idea what you are talking about. VGA looks WAY better than component if your TV has decent VGA support (which many LCDs lack).

To the TC, 1080x768 isn't even an available resolution. And 1280x768 should look fine if you have an LCD TV. If your TV has a native resolution of 1280x720 (most projection/DLP TVs), use that resolution.

Also, whoever said VGA is only for 1080p should also STFU.  VGA is better than component for ANY HD resolution (720p or 1080p).

VGA is the only way to display MOVIES in true 1080p on 360. Component will not let you. Also, games do not support 1080p regardless if you're running through VGA. They max at at 1080i. They won't just magically convert simply because you're using a cable. So yes, VGA is better than component, but as far as support it's not 1080p across the board. Thanks. -K

hey I have the same tv, only smaller, and I thought the same thing when i first used the vga.  I went into picture settings put it to dynamic then moved the conrtrast and brightness around till i got what i liked, contrast 90 and britghness 60, but whatever works for you. Dynamic gives you the highest colour setting in vga mode which you cant adjust manually only through the different presets.  I found dynamic to be the best.  Also turn off game mode as it makes the picture look washed out.  The picture wont be as vibrant and colourful as component but i found it to be more crisp, anyway hope this helps.

Actually, component DOES support 1080p on the 360, it is just that there are very few TVs that support 1080p over component.

Set your resolution to 1360x768. Thats the closest to your TVs native resolution. Your TV doesn't support 1080p (1920x1080).

As for a washed out image, play around with you brightness/contrast settings. VGA has its own brightness and contrast settings on a lot of TVs so it should'nt affect your component/scart etc. connections.

If set right VGA can look a lot better than component since it runs at your TVs native resolution. Very few TVs actualy have a native true 720p resolution (1280x720) which component outputs. The VGA upscaling of DVDs works great too. You could almost mistake some regular DVDs for HD-DVDs.

I'm using a 360 VGA cable to connect to my LG 20" LCD widescreen monitor and it looks fantastic. I used to have a $2000 hdtv but got rid of it thankfully because I hardly notice a difference and will never pay so much for one again.

Ummm... the thing about games not support 1080p isn't true. Some games on the 360 do in fact support 1080p resolution, like Virtua Tennis 3.

Actually, you're the one sho doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. The washed out colors using vga has been reported on many different televisions, some of them very high end. Also, component at 1080p looks far better on some tvs. I've had both a Sony Bravia and a Sharp Aquos 1080p and I find component on the Sharp to be the best pic of all. Lastly, it's nothing about tv'shaving decent vga support, it's that a lot of tvs think the input is comming from a pc when you use vga, hence the problems that arise.

Don't be telling people vga is better in all cases because that's simply not true. I'm guessing you don't have a 1080p television...

Well I know thta on my TV, it looks like crap, I have tried everythign everyone has said, and I put in a regular DVD in my HDDVD drive with VGA. It looked the same as componet. There did not seems to be any more upscaling on my DVD's than before. I fooled with the contras and the brightness, I fooled with the Game Mode, I put it on every setting for the display, and the VGA looked liek crap on my TV compared to Componet. So these cables will be going right back to the store. Thanks for everyones advice, It just did not do any diffrence on my TV.

For the record, regarding the original post, the 360 WILL NOT upconvert dvds. This has become some kind of urban myth. Using the VGA cable will output 1080p on HDDVDs if you have the HDDVD drive. Component cables will output movies up to 1080i because of DHCP (copyprotection). Peace, I'm out.
