If you think about it, its a really good deal. Its 150 now and it comes with 5 free HD-DVDs. Since most HD-DVDs cost $30, that means you get $150 in free HD-DVD. Id say spending 150 to get 150 in free stuff aint too bad a deal.
Personally, I have and will most likely always be a DVD guy myself. The way I see it, neither HD-DVD nor Blue-Ray will win the format war. The winner will be digital distribution (itunes, amazon unbox, ...). Soon DVDs and HD-DVDs and Blue Ray will go the way of the dodo, just like its clear CDs are doing (I havent checked the official numbers but Im pretty sure CD sales have gone down drasticly over the last 3 years). But thats just my opinion.
I was just wondering if you guys think the hd dvd addon is wort it because of the new price drop or not. I want to get it but at the same time I don't want to get stuck with a player that won't have movies for it (if blu-ray wins the format war)...so before i make a final decision i was just wondering if any of you guys have the player and think that it is worth gettiing.Kalua
What kind of Television do you have? If you aren't 42"+ and1080i or higher I wouldnt reccommend going HD, just stick with upscaled stuff.
I'd like to have it...but i just can't honestly see myself buying HD-DVD's (i usually just rent new releases) and seeing as the videostore chains haven't really "embraced" HD yet it just seems pointless right now. ss_49
Netflix is supporting both formats for renting, so its a moot point.

Well Blockbuster kinda sorta declared Blu-Ray the winner. They are now only adding Blu-Ray titles.

Blockbuster is the suck...
If you are getting a 42"+ and a 1080i capable TV, HD-DVD has an awesome picture and great sound quality. In addition to the features of the format, its hands down a better experience than DVDs. An example of an HD-DVD feature is the ability to browse the scene selection while the movie is still playing. Some movies do this at the bottom, some do it using an overlay. That is just one of the great features...
Your 360 will upscale depending on the capable you are running, but upscaled images mean they are stretching pixels and its not as crisp and sharp as a true 1080P signal.
Regular DVD upscaling:
Component Cable = 480P
VGA = up to 1080P
HDMI (Elite) = up to 1080P
HD-DVD = Native 1080P movies so almost 3 times as much image data, much better looking movie. (If you ain't first your last).
My advice is find a store that has one setup and go look at it yourself. I doubt they will have one hooked up to the XBox add-on, it will be a stand-alone player, but you will get the idea.

blu ray already won-sharp-shooter-
won what? maybe you can link us to the thread that shows Universal has quit releasing movies in HD-DVD... Oh wait, they have released more movies in the past month than Bluray... I guess you are right... Based on your logic the Taliban should be giving up any day now.

 Best post ever. "Go to system wars" :lol:So why don't you post REAL reason why you think Blue-Ray has already won?
I would get the add-on to start enjoying HD movies right now. Regardless of what happens in the format war, I believe the final outcome will involve a standardization of hardware that will play Blu-Ray and HD DVD movies. Hybrid players are becoming more common and it is clear that the formats can co-exist on one device. If Blu-Ray wins, then Toshiba and the rest of the HD DVD crew will fall in line and everybody will work on a standard in future players, one where early adopters of HD DVD are not totally screwed over by having to rebuy their movies on Blu-Ray. HD DVD movies will no longer be sold, of course, but it would be nice to still be able to play those that were already purchased. I think this would make the most business sense.
And if HD DVD is the winner? Well, then the same situation will occur - Blu-Ray movies being compatible with future HD DVD players.
This kind of compatibility was impossible to have in the VHS-Betamax war - the physical media was just too different. This is not the case with HD DVD and Blu-Ray.
Just something to think about. You only will really lose on the hardware if HD DVD loses, and since you get 5 free movies it doesn't sound like too bad a bargain.
since the hd dvd player comes with 5 free movies sounds like MS is trying to copy sony-sharp-shooter-HD DVD stand alone players had the 5 free movies first :|

Look Sony Fanboi, The PS3 doesnt do one thing that is considered innovative. They have copied everything from either the 360 or the Wii. So lets not start throwing rocks in glass houses.
Just because a couple of knuckle heads on this forum think the war is over doesnt make it true. Did you know in Europe HD-DVD outsells Bluray? Whoa, guess the war is over HD-DVD has won! /sarcasm off/
Im not going to buy an hddvd player, but for anyone that wants to, it has already been stated that with the 5 free movies it basically pays for itself. Then even if bluray wins the war, its not like the movies you have or the ones that are out already wont play anymore. So even if you go out and buy it and hddvd loses, you can still watch the movies you have anytime you want, so if you are happy with the movie choices out right now, theres really no reason not to buy one if you want it.
If you have any questions about the player or anything, let me know.
I figure that worst case scenario is the format slowly dies over the next 2-3 years. Even if that happens, I still will have several movies that look great. And as someone else pointed out, I got 6 free movies and only paid $140 for the player. So I basically got the player for the cost of a few movies. Not really a risk at all if you look at it that way.
Well the hd dvd add on is only a really great buy if your thinkin of using your Xbox 360 as a DVD player rather than buying it and ust playin live all the time and only watch like two movies in the whole year on it which by then youl regret having bought it and want to sell it but the price will have gone down and youl get less than half of what you bought it for
Sorry for that whole look into the future thing
i get carried away sometimes
Also keep 2 things in mind in regards to this format war.
1. As long as you own your 360 you will be able to play your HD-DVD movies. Its no better or worse an investment than buying a game like Oblivion.
2. CD-RW +/- DVD +/- R : Recent format war, what happened? Hardware supports both formats. This is the way everything is heading. Moving forward just buy a player that can do both Bluray and HD-DVD. That way you dont loose your investment. One company (I thinkUniversal)has even developed a disc that will hold both HD-DVD and Blumax on the same disc.
With 5 free movies, Microsoft is basically giving you the add-on. HD-DVD movie is between $19 and $30 (combo movies), which means the value is approx 100 - 150$ depending on which movies you select.
If you have the setup to take advantage of HD-DVD, its worth it to take the plunge.
Are there lists available for which movies each format has, because I think that would be pretty helpful for me when I decide. bloodlust3192
Go to Amazon.com and do a search first on HD-DVD then Blumax (or vice-versa). That is probably the best way to do it since they have every title available.
Also keep in mind though, some movies that are Betaray exclusive in the US are available in HD-DVD in Europe.
