So, i have a wii but it has just been sitting collecting dust, so with tax money coming back i am looking at getting a new system. After weighing the pros and cons of both the ps3 and 360, i am leaning more torwards the 360, but i am worried about reliability.

I know that the 360 had problems when it first came out with "red rings of death", but i haven't really kept up with the news. Has this been fixed? what is the chance of my new 360 developing problems that would require me to send it in to microsoft? I want to get a 360 but i dont want the hassle of dealing with a broken machine, and if things haven't improved fromt the earlier days i might have to go the ps3 route. Thanks in advance.

Xbox360 is the best to get, the only reasons you get the red ring of death is because it overheats and other stuff like that.

Yeah apparently you don't keep up with them well. Yes they still have problems with them. The main problem is the heat sink thermal compound they use is really cheap and doesn't work well causing your system to over heat and break loose the sauder. They are still using the same paste and there are plently of people getting RROD's. Another new issue is the video output. We personally have had three with the video outputs going out.

Haha, you do know the Elite has the SAME internals right? Different color and hdmi cable included is the only difference.

I had to post a message when i seen this topic because last night my third xbox broke with a completely different problem than my previous two and am in a foul mood but am a fool and will pay to get it repaired because its a great machine despite all of its flaws and the games and online experience is second to none compared to the playstation.

Elite has a new chip for both GPU and CPU, thats why the PSU is smaller.

It amazes me people are reluctant to buy a 360 because of the hardware issues. Micrsoft gives a three year warranty and on top of that you can buy an extended warranty cheap as hell. Also, I believe the newer 360s don't have any problems like the earlier ones. I have gone through three systems and Micrsoft replaced it every time for free. And you know what, if my fourth one crapped out I and I didn't get a replacement I would still go buy another one. My PS3 and Wii don't cut it.

Agreed... I believe that if you want an overal gaming experience, Performance and veriety, an xbox is the best. Wii is too childish and the PS3 is too much of a minority console. Let alone the copies of everything xbox has. Also, xbox live is a subscription based programme because it allows for maintenance and extra servers. Giving a much better gaming experience... And if you want a cooling solution, look at my thread ;) http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26766552&msg_id=309238414#309238414

To overheat one now you'd have to practically do in on purpose. I've had mine since launch and I leave it on for 36 hours at some points, and it's had no problems.

Friends of mine have gotten RROD but they leave in a claustraphobic shelf or even worse, lay it on the carpet.

It's a great system, and the 6 bucks a month for live is definitely worth it.

I own both consoles. So I gotta tell you if you have more friends with the 360 then get the 360. If none of your friends own either console get the PS3. I find that gaming with friends is extremely fun but the lack of upcoming 360 exclusives is kind of sad. The PS3 is getting alot of new exclusive games that shouldnt be missed but like I said before If you want a to stay in touch with friends and play with the get the 360. Ps3 is really lacking in that department due to the fact that their is no in-game voice chat with friends who arent in the game your playing

Want to bet? I have cracked open several and they are the same. The elite has the SAME internals. When the Elite first came out it was different, not now. They are all the same and they do have problems with them still. Anyone who says they don't just hasn't had one break. I fix them on the side and have had several newer 360's with RROD and video output broken. RROD is covered for three years now, but other issues aren't. There were also several people who had HDMI issues after the NXE update.

The 360's former issues with reliability were the only things that negatively set it apart from the other consoles, but since those problems have been pretty much eliminated with the 360's newest chipset ("Jasper"), those issues don't really exist anymore. So yeah get an Xbox.

I would say you go for the xbox 360. But honestly, the RROD issues is still there and it will never be 100% fixed. It's a matter of luck when you buy the xbox 360. Sometimes I regret I have bought xbox 360 instead of PS 3... and I have had my xbox 360 since the first day it offically launched.

Welcome to the forums! Please use the stickied Broken 360 thread to discuss reliability of the console. Thanks!
