What actually does an hdmi port do? I mean does it allow for 720p or whatever? I have a high definition television and no next gen systems right now. Does that mean that the premium 360 as of now cannot output games in high def? I guess i just don't understand what it does because i thought that 360 already had high definition. Please don't flame i just don't get it.

HDMI is just an input that is digital, but also has the sound transfer built in. It's most comparable to a DVI cable with stereo sound built into it. It will output to 1080p, but only if your TV supports it.
