I hope that i am not alone when i take a disliking towards this man. Dont get me wrong, I dont take a grudge to a person placing their name onto game releases (Sid Meier has churned out many polished game) but theirs something about clancy that smells.

When sequels become 5 titles long, i mean, he's released over 15 games, and after playing Double agent. I just think he's become one of those money makers sticking his name on titles to pay for his pension..

Just argh

I don't really get it to be honest. Rainbow six was based on Tom Clanceys book or the same title......but the rest of the games, from what I know, are not based on Clancey books? Maybe Clancey writes the story for the games?

Are you sure? Seems a weird way for it to happen. Books are usually how storys start out, and then later, someone will make a game of it, or a movie.

I'm reading the book at the mooment as it happens......all 900 pages of it :(

My bad there, i thought the guy was involved in the production of the games, i realised he wrote books as well. Just shows that a lot of the time games tied into movies, books and such all seem to be just another market for people to make money in. where does this put sid meier?

Tom Clancy is ubisoft's money maker. Hell, I'd be happy to have him on my team. That guy is brilliant.

Well, after playing rainbow six vegas I can safely say that the game is better than most shooters out there. Money making is what's happening with call of duty and the sims. Tom clancy games are quality games. They just strike the balance between taking big steps in their games to always have something new and amazing (crytek, bungie, blizzard etc. etc. etc.) and pure money making (the sims, call of duty etc.). The same thing is with grand theft auto. They develop one game for a long time, and make it a quality game, and the years after that make some games with small changes in gameplay, story and setting. After that, work starts for the next start of a small series again. Such a series can be GRAW 1 and 2, or it can be GTA 3, vice city and san andreas.

The last time I read about him I was under the impression that he has nothing to do with the Tom Clancy games. In fact some of the books the games were based off weren't even written by him but ghost writers who just slapped Tom Clancy on the cover. That's pretty much the same case for the video games.

As long as he's making money, I don't think he cares, besides, he just comes up with the ideas, Ubisoft makes the games.

I have played alot of the Clancey games and as much as the games are good - I don't think the story lines are all that memorable or great. All I ever remember was something to do with terrorists taking over a place and you have to go kill them

Tom Clancy has pretty much stopped writing books too. Every novel these days says Tom Clancy's blank by so and so. Hes just putting his name on crap and getting money for it. His books from the 80's and early 90's were good. But his games have all been stinkers to me. I don't even know how much he is involved with the games he puts his name on but they are all pretty cliched and tired. GRAW had an interesting plot sort of but I don't care much for that type of gameplay. Splinter Cell Conviction sort of has my interest because they are basing that fugitive on the run gameplay on the Jason Bourne movies which I think is cool but I hated all of the other Splinter Cells so I'm wary of this one even if it sounds cool. Hopefully theres a demo because I'm not placing any money on a Clancy gmae again without knowing for myself it isn't crap.

tom clancy is an author, not a video game developer. although for the games that has his name on it, he's had some sort of participation in it, wether it be writing the script or writing the story. i don't care though, all i know is that i've played the majority of the games with his name on it and they've all been well above average, i have yet to be let down.

No actually Rainbow Six (the novel) was written in 1998...way before that. You're thinking of Splinter Cell...which was his idea (though he didn't like the trifocals).

He's the idea person. Like EndWar's loosely based on Red Storm Rising, updated to match today's political situation.

It's a marketing device. If a the game was just called End War it wouldn't garner the same response as it does as Tom Clancy's End War; putting his name on it is a way of branding the game. Also, if you think the gaming industry or publishing industry (or any other industry for that matter) is about anything other than making money, you're awfully naive.

As many have already stated Tom Clany is an author, not a game designer. And RB6 was written prior to the game of the same name.

As for everyhting having his name on it. I imagine it is similar to a license. He is essentially selling the right to put his name on anything from games to books. I imagine that, anymore, he has limited or no input on content.

Can't really blame the guy (although I personally rate him as a sell out). I mean, if somebody offered you beaucoup bucks to use your name you would jump at the chance, right??

In the first Rainbow Six games he helped the devs. Now the devs know what they're doing, but his name stays because he is a well known author and it helps sell the games. What's wrong with that?

why hate games after they have brought out 5 or more releases of a title, if they good games then nothing wrong with bringing out more. tom clancy games ive played on 360 all of them have been good quality games. some are a bit too indepeth for some people, and everyone has they own faves they like more over the other genres but generally on the 360 they have been some good titles
