extended capacity disc can store up to 7 hours1 of high definition content

Toshiba takes HD DVD to the Next Level With 51GB HD DVD-ROM Disc

Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7, 2007 and Tokyo, Japan, January 8, 2007 -- Toshiba Corporation today underlined the versatility and high capacity of the HD DVD format with the announcement that the company has developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes. The new disc can store up to 7 hours1 of high-definition video and adds an extended capacity, high-end option to the already extensive line-up of HD DVD-ROM discs. Toshiba aims to secure approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year.

The new ROM disc has a three-layer structure, with each layer storing 17GB of data. The advances capacity over current ROM discs, which hold 15GB of data in each layer of a single-sided disc. Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation.

The new disc shares the same disc structure as standard DVD and previously announced HD DVD formats: two 0.6-mm thick discs bonded back-to-back. This time-tested physical structure offers proven volume manufacturing at little cost increment.

Toshiba will feature the new disc at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2007, in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 8 to 11, at the Toshiba booth.

*1 Recording capacity at a sampling rate of 17 mbps.

Too little too late. By that time it will not have mattered what they did at this point in the game. Unless they have more exclusivity announcements in store.

Its too late for both of them. As well as the exclusivities, both need to make a marketing push as standard dvd sales are still going strong. As well as recent advancements in scaler technology is no providing same quality visuals off standard dvds.

If they dont, both will fail miserably.

Yes, sir you got it right, exept they wont fail, they'll coexist for a few years. It will be years before the masses start really purchasing it when hdtv's are lower prices.

Yes they give you more room but seriously the disc only read at 17 bps blu doubles that. It will be about a year before they can issue it. Plus the players will def need to firmwares just to play the new discs. This war will get ugly.

well the fact that all hd-dvd players have the capacity to connect to the internet that firmware update shouldn't be a problem

Did they say anywhere if this new disc is compatible with all current HD-DVD players, or is this a PC specific disc? It's not going to help high-def video if the currenty players can't read it.

Seeing how old the article is, I take not, and that it's just a lab experiment, or otherwise we'd all know of it already.
