The towel trick does not work. Its a lot of video scammers just trying to ruin your 360. THink about it, all the towel does is ADD heat to your 360. If you think logically consoles dont do well on high temperatures...nothing does well on high temps.

DO NOT USE THE TOWEL TRICK ITS A SCAM

actually it did work for me....temporarly. Mine died right after i got halo 3 beta, so we tried the towel trick. It worked........but after turning it off it wouldnt turn back on, lights of doom. And the towel trick didnt work again. If you dont believe me go to bungie.net and look at ajr911, i only played halo3 4 games, and that was a cople of days ago..not sure how many. And if ive been on at all since then its from being on xbox.com I dont know if that counts though

ok, dont listen to the people talking about the hot/cold, and it not working and s***.

my 360 got the red lights like... a month ago (check out my avatar).

3 red lights is a hardware failure, this means that something INSIDE the xbox isnt working.

this could be caused by a varity of things, but 90% of the time, its because microsoft used REALLY poor, cheap sodder that breaks appart, and seperates the processor from the motherboard. You dont wrap a 'damp, cool' towell arround it, you wrap as many normal towells as possible arround it to keep as much heat IN as possible, this will re-melt the sodder on to the motherboard. WABAM! your xbox works again.

(of course its only temporary, and will eventually just stop working, but its a great thing to do untill you can get a new xbox or get that one fixed... properly.)

Towel trick is bull. If it does work its only temporary and you'll have to do it for the rest of the time you own the thing. The reason your 360 broke is most likely that the crappy paper-thin mother board has warped under the heat and the cpu's detached. What the towel trick does is it heats the 360 up so much that the soldering on the circuit board melts and the cpu is reattached to the motherboard. eventually the soldering gives in and the cpu detaches again, which is why you have to repeat the process. The only true way to fix it is to send it in to M$. Sucks but its true, the sooner you accept it the better off youll be.

M$ will fix an un-warrantied 360 for something around $140 i think.

Ya the towel trick is very bad on the 360's hardware.  If infact your cpu/gpu have been detached b/c of the solder it will temporarily fix it so long as you haven't done damage to other components.  Using the 360 to heat itself to the point where solder is melting is not healthy.  Best bet is to simply have it fixed because eventually the hardware will break from the heat.

so obviously the towel trick is out of the question. i dont think i would try it casue i would be afraid of breaking my 360 but has anyone here actually tried opening it up and changing the heat sinks or at least how its mounted. i hear that works too. anyone try that?

nah' towel trick works, and works just as good as blowing into old nintendo cartages. YOu know your gonna have to do it again if you want to play it. same thing goes with the towel n 360. dude if your under warranty send it in but if you need that quick video game fix in the middle of the night DO IT, i mean it already gots 3 red lights flashing so you know its not working as it was intended. and pleas sum old schooler like me please explain how "Blowing into a Nintendo Cartage" got it to work?
