I suppose there's a niche for clever trash-talking, but it'll just get drowned out in all the inane babble on Xbox Live. Unless I'm playing a team-based game, I just mute everyone in the lobby. I don't want to hear it.Palantas

I agree, I don't mind trash talking. What I do mind is boring, lame, cliche, uninspired trash talk.

I always laugh about the phrase "can't back it up" in relation to video game performance and trash talk. It's not like you're trash talking about your ability to run a marathon, win the Tour de France, lift a thousand pounds, kick a football a hundred yards, three point throw all day without missing, etc. etc.

We're talking about putting our hands in a stationary position in our laps and manipulating plastic sticks and buttons in a certain way that causes colored dots of light projected on a piece of glass/plastic to do certain things. (i.e. we control, a video game characeter). In other words ... who cares if the trash talkers can "back it up" or not. This is just video games, and trash talking outside your close group of friends is disrespectful, annoying, and pretty much unacceptable in a public setting. That's why the good folks at Microsoft allow us to mute these idiots.

Now ... if only ALL games had a "mute all" setting like Halo 3.

Trash talk online is exactly what keeps many adult gamers from joining Xbox Live. It took me four years to finally make this step and I have to say,that I have not heard any trash talk so far. Maybe it depends on the game you play. I find it amusing to listen to two friends talking about their private life while they are shooting dozens of people with a blink of an eye.

Trash talk is very immature and hopefully when I play, all teenagers are in bed already ;)

I don't understand peoples aversion to trash talk.. you can instantly turn off all voices by hitting your mute button on your controller. You can mute everyone in game.

But more than that I just don't get why people get annoyed by it.
