"wasting your life" is totally subjective.

There is only a small handful of people that have not "wasted" their lifes, the people you remeber.

Haha, odd topic, but im bored so I'll respond. I don't play that much, but If you really like to play then go ahead. Also, If your in debt from buying video games you need a new job. I mean yeah, its probably good to have some balance in your life, spending 90% of your free time playing video games is certainly not what I would do, but thats because it bores me after a while. If you legitimately love video games and don't like sports or socializing, then go for it. Who cares what other people think. And yes, you may regret it one day if thats all you do, but I don't think most people just sit and play all day all the time.

Yeah I've had this revelation before, and am taking action, there are so many things to experience in life, that playing games shouldn't take up a majority of your time. I used to play for hours on end, but now I'm perfectly content playing cod4 every other day for an hour. I could probably play less, but it's not like I can really go many other places, since I'm at school.

Yeah, Im pretty sure everyone is "wasting their life." At least if you buy into what the media wants you to believe. Lebron plays basketball and makes millions so he is not wasting his life b/c he is a celebrity. My dad on the other hand IS wasting his life, b/c he is just a lowly lawyer making 800k. Obviously im being sarcastic, but thats basically how people think. My dad of course probably thinks someone "below" him is wasting his life. That person things someone below him is.......

That philosophy could be applied to anything. Take books. Sure it could be educational, but more times than not you will not be able to apply the book to your life in any constructive way. Take sports, sure they're fun to play and keep you busy, but it's no more important than anything else anyone does. It's not like you're going to become a pro anyways. Just spend a third of your life working up to failure. It's all about what a person wants to do. Everyone has different tastes and opinions. What you find useful and constructive, others don't and vice versa.

If playing video games interferes with you socializing with family friends or new people. If it takes the place of dating or having a romantic life (or lack of one). If it keeps you from going to school to further your education. If it keeps you from being able to put in hard work and effort to slowly raise the bar that is the quality of life that you lead, then YES it is an absolutely waste of time. If you can manage to do those things AND play video games then it's just icing on a great cake ... and the icing is sometimes the tastiest part.

It can be a tough balance but many people lead interesting, productive lives filled with merriment, success and joy and play the hell out of video games.

I believe neuroscience proved video games can improve responsiveness, reflex, and multi-dimensional (foreground verses background)processing. They are using CoD in curing lazy eye..... Come on...... Science and video games... Its the beez neez brother ...... Like the earlier guys said, its all relative. Most of my peers drink beer in bars, watch football and have jobs they hate. When I have the chance I play games all the time, but love my job (archaeologist) and do cool stuff..... Nope.... Not a waste at all

I can see where he was going with that comment. No offense to your dad but there are literally tons and tons of lawyers, and there are an extreme few that I could name off the top of my head. Now I don't necessarily agree entirelly with his second statement, but again I can see what he saying. However, I agree 100% about it being subjective, many people value many different things in life. Also I don't think pay is a good measuring stick for the value of a life. Not everyone can grow up to be the next "Michael". Just because someone works a line job in a factory doesn't mean they are wasting their life anymore than anyone else. Sorry, kind of off topic.

to most people its just a fun way to kill time. i mean, videogames, what do u really gain in life from playin them, not much if anything. but their just a great way of conecting with friends and meeting new ones. Its good and fun to a point, but if you play nonstop for 23 hrs a day and its not your job or something then its basically jst you wasting you life. now i love videogames, i play em all the time, but i know when to stop.

like what the porkey dood says about being subjective is right, what in your eyes could be the biggest waste of life, could actually be someone elses world.

It's a waste of time and money, but so are other things. If you enjoy that time that is being wasted, then it doesn't matter at all. Video games are fun for me, so I don't see it as a waste of time in a bad sense.

1. If anyone spends money on games instead of things his family needs that is just wow i can't even think of a word to say that isn't banned :P.

2. Video games are a hobby just like bird watching, sports, and etc. If you believe you are spending too much money on your hobby get a love for books you can purchase them very cheap or just have a library card. In other words get a cheaper hobby if it costs too much.

My problem is not the amount of time I waste playing, it's having bought so many games and not caring enough about them to get playing value out of them. them. Since the Xbox came out I have only spent a lot of time playing just a few games of the many I purchased.

It's not a waste... it is something I enjoy... and it entertains me... Look at Football (soccer) fans in Europe, and Football fans in the US... People pay 200+ quid for a ticket... and they go to every game, so thousands of pounds... in the US people pay thousands of dollars to get a seats close to the field and for season tickets to games... Is that not a waste? To pay $1000 to go sit on an uncomfortable chair for 3 hours and watch a ball get tossed around...?

I have fun playing videogames... I don't see how it is a waste if it is something thatentertains me...

Strange question to ask on a game forum. Anyway, no, it's just a hobby for me. Like others that play golf.

Like other people said it is a waste of time, but what people live life to the fullest?

That is what I recently tried to do and things of gotten better. I still play games but not every second of every hour.

My friend literaly lives through games, and its sad really. During the summer he had a job, (not anymore, I guesses why?) payday rolls around, and every single time without

fail he would spend the entire check on games. He skips school to play games, he as played so many games that he has become so saturated no game can hold his attention

for more than a few days. Sorry for the little history lesson, I am not telling anyone to stop playing games, I just wanted to show what it games can do. Now can that happen

to people by other things, such as tv, drugs, etc, absolutely. But dont sit here and tell me that games have no effect of peoples lifes.

Its not a waste at all unless the gaming is getting in the way of normal life things like some of you here pointed out. It's hard to draw the line on things like this. Some people play video games 2 - 3 hours a day, some people watch tv 2 - 3 hours a day. Playing video games is a source of entertainment. Some people spend most of their time fishing, wood working as a hobby. Playing video games is just a hobby in my eyes, some people collect systems and games, you talk to your friends about games, you play online with friends and enjoy yourself.

Almost all things in moderation are healthy. Gaming is becoming more of a norm and I like that. Gone are the days you would feel silly for telling someone you play video games. At least I feel that way. I'm almost 24 and play games almost every other day, even if it is only an hour at least I get my fix. I could have used up that same hour watching TV. I work 40+ hours a week, see my friends when I can, hang out with the lady friend, I have time for everything and everyone. So for me gaming is NOT a waste of time.

I would argue that your friend has some internal issues that he needs to learn to deal with. If it was games it could just as easily be TV or someother pastime that weighs him down. I look at games the same way I do TV or movies. In essense they are essentially interactive movies. I play them instead of watching TV or a movie and I don't let them rule my life. I used them as entertainment to unwind and enjoy after my responsibilties as an adult, husband, father are done. The games themselves do not corrupt people and waste lives. The people who use them let that happen to themselves. It's called responsibilty. Anyone who's life is wasting away in front of a video game console should not be blaming the console. The blame lies 100% within themselves.

What kind of person would sit for 8 hours a day in front of a computer monitor, 5 days a week doing the same repetitive button bashing and not really getting any satisfaction out of it? Oh wait, that's called a regular job Playing a video game is no more or less a waste of time than reading a book, watching a film, going for a walk or countless other things. If it's something you do for pleasure then enjoy it, if you don't then find something else that you can enjoy. There are far worse things a person can do with their time and money than spend both playing a video game.

I used to be a pretty hardcore gamer, meaning I spent most of the day everyday playing. Now as I have gotten older I play very casually. I could go two weeks without playing and not feel like I need or really care, but sometimes I do have that urge and I play for a couple hours. My view on this is that it is a waste of time if it is all you do, like WOW players. There a lot of things to do in life that are much more satisfying and healthy, yes playing games isn't very healthy if you do it obssesively. For one thing, spending that much time sitting down or laying down isn't good for your body, and then there's yours eyes, they will pay the price eventually, just like with people that spend most of their time on a computer. You do pay the price.

But really most people aren't going to admit they play too much, just like an alcoholic won't admit he or she drinks too much. I'm not trying to judge because like I said I used to play way too much. Seriously there are a lot of things that are just as fun if not more fun to do with your time than playing video games. I'm not saying people should stop, but just take it down a notch. I like the saying "There is such thing as too much of a good thing." I feel like that applies to many of the "good" things in life. Like I said I'm not judjing but rather just giving my insight.

Also I'm sure some of the people who read this are going to say,"What's one thing that's more fun than video games?", well I can't speak for the world but one suggestion is picking up an instrument, believe it or not it's 1000x times more satisfying the rock band or guitar hero. Then there is socializing with live people, that's always fun. Another thing I do that I find satisfying is working out. Most people can benefit from working out. Just my opinion.

I disagree with part of what you're saying. Reading a book, depending on what you read, is really not a waste of time. I'm guessing you're either younger and think you know everything, or are older and hate your life. You're awfully defensive.

Well, everyone needs a hobby to spent time on and which it is, doesn't really matter. I'd say as long as you enjoy what you are doing, it isn't a waste

My dad likes to bring this discussion every time he gets a chance. He says if I didn't spend all that money on videogames I could have a car by now. Thing is, here in Mexico things are expensive and the only chance I'll get to buying a car are buying a used one. I don't like the idea of buying used cars as they usually mean problems; most of my friends who have bought used cars have had problems within the first few weeks after buying the damn car. Besides, I don't truely enjoy doing a lot of things. Back when I sold my first 360, my only other hobbies were drinking beer, smoking like an insane, and staying up all night working on some musical projects (none of which ever flourished). Whenever I'm asked if I think what I do the most (play videogames) is worth it, I always answer that life is so short that we must do what we can do enjoy it. If playing videogames makes me relax for a while and forget about the economic issues plus all that garbage going on in my country (drug dealers, robbery, swine flu, awfully paid jobs) then I'm all for them.

no i do not think it's a waste of time. god invented video games as he did all things on this planet and my parents taught me the difference between right and wrong. it is not illegal to play video games. it is however alot of fun. i think people should do what they like providing it is legal and within the boundaries of good judgement. i do not think god will look at me and say you wasted your life on video games. i think they are an important part of daily life. i like to play for an hour or so a day. it relaxes me and provides entertainment. i don't think there is anything wrong with it. and i don't think there is any difference between some school teacher who watches a movie every day and a guy who likes to play video games. matter of fact, i think the smarter person is playing video games. i think video games will live on many years until they invent some kind of virtual reality that is better than video games. until then my friends, take your controller and play until death! :)
