Okay well my topic got locked in the pc section for obvious reasons i guess, but i got some good answers (mainly yes, buy it). Plus, I want to add, tigerdirect has a pretty cheap Refurbished premium version with a bunch of cables and crap in it. Is it a good choice to get the refurbished version? Here is the original text, and thanks in advance:
So I am and always will be a pc gamer at heart, but you have to admit that there's been an ongoing drought of actual games to play. I mean, until Fall07 and onwards, I'm pretty much stuck to even more CSS, even more BF, some Rainbow Six Vegas and DiRT. There's so much of a statis quo on the pc gaming side that I'm finding myself trying to find those old classics like Populous3, Syndicate, F22 TAW etc. I then looked at the upcoming selection of games that the 360 has to offer, such as Mass Effect and whatnot, and I was interested. Of course, I will always buy multi-platform releases for the PC only, but its games like Mass Effect that tick me off...
So, seeing as I have purchased an excellent HDTV since september 06 and having watched a total of about 5 days on it, I'd say its existance is pretty useless for now. It's just sitting there playing the discovery channel (canada) reruns all day.
Thus, watching tv is not worth it when I'm bored from the PC, there's never anything good on, except Mythbusters of course. And to justify the price I paid for the useless HDTV running digital cable shows (non-HDTV), I actually considered getting a 360 just to play on it when I have nothing to do on the PC. Alright, its $500-something (canadian), which costs almost half as much as my graphics card, so the price is fine. But of course, you have to count the wifi adapter in there as well which is an added 99$usd. Great.. "addons" that almost feel necessary to get. Very nice, Microsoft, I've never seen a living room with a LAN wire going across it to reach the 360, so might as well get the wifi.
Now, I'm almost on the verge of buying an Elite, when I finally read user comments on various sites like amazon and futureshop.
Basically, they all talk about the 3 red rings of death and how getting an xbox360 without the $50usd warranty is suicidal. Another necessary 50$. And this problem is, I guess, widespread? People have had their systems fail for no reason after 5 days. For any price, I've never had a piece of technology fail after 5 days, I mean, 20$ one-game-consoles sold on the streets to ignorant parents with annoying kids have better lifespan than a 360. I also hear customer support for the 360 is not the best in the world and waiting for a system to get repaired and shipped takes months. Yeah, by the time I theoretically get my console back, UT3 and Crysis would have come out and I would have forgotten about it.
So please, people who are 'in' with the xbox360 and its community, could you please inform me on the actual 3-red-ring epidemic? Is it really that bad? Do you consider yourself lucky to have a system run out of the box?
As a side note, in this day and age, when topics revolve around system wars, I don't see how console gamers can keep criticising the pc for its BSODs and failures. I've never had a PC fail in the 5 days of getting or building one. Then again, I never bought an Ibuypower, CyberPowerInc, or a Dell.
So what do you think, is it worth getting an xbox360, or should I just wait and play old games till left4dead, hl2ep2,tf2,portal, ut3, crysis, bioshock, world in conflict come out.
I'm not hating the xbox360 or consoles in general, I was about to buy one, I'm just worried about getting one and having it fail on me for no reason.
