Unbiassed views wanted regarding FFXI and Phantasy star Universe

My brother really wants a FFXI type game, but is undure which one to go for. Either FF:XI or PS:U

Could anyone with the games tell me the good and bad points and also the subscription costs in UK pounds.

Granted I have been out of FFXI for over a year now (left just before the last expansion). But I truely enjoyed FFXI, the lower level gind is ... well, just that, a gind. Once you make it to level 30 a lot more stuff opens up that you are able to do.
