its not an upgrade... they are doing maintenance... the spring update is coming at a later date I kept seeing people talking about an update. There were a lot of people posting about what they wanted to see in the update, like a web browser and some chatting stuff.
It is an upgrade. On Xbox.com they had a Q/A section on their site stating this. Unfortunately now the site is down also. And besides if it's just maintanence it shouldn't take no more than an hour. The 14 hour down time is for something.

It's just a normal maintanence, they have one in the spring and one in the autumn/fall. They upgrade their software and hardware, so they will need more than 1 hour to do that. The maintanence is also (I belive) a preparation for the spring update later this is spring.

xbox is just doing maintanence on xbox live right now..its not really a huge update or anything like a dashboard update. they started last night at midnight i believe.
