Because some games will have patches that are out right when the game comes out. It may have been too late to fix a small problem before the games got stamped. It is easier to do it this way than to stop production for something that is easily fixed with an update. Plus, it depends on the game. If it is new to you, but has been out for a while, it may just be a regular update like most games get after a while.

A lot of times, the game developers don't notice problems with the games until they come out and the masses play them.

Ye as stated, when the software development is finished, there is still a long way to go to get it to the masses. You have marketing campaigns, box buying, disc creation, and manuals to print. In this time, some slight glitch may have been found.

Rather than product recall and reprinting everything again, developers can just issue minor patches to fix the game.

Before this was available developers had to recall or ride the glitches. I remember Sonic the hedgehog on the dreamcast having massive recall (i worked in a game shop at the time) because a huge load of copies wouldn't load, which probably cost alot of money.

Pacthes are win win for everyone. Consumers get better quality with minimal cost for developers.
