my friend is hooking up a wireless network in his house for his 360... but he doesnt wnat to use the xbox 360 wireless adapter... he is getting a Netgear Router and USB adapter also which is Netgear... you think this will do him just fine or has there been problems with adapters taht are not made by microsoft?

That wont work on 360, only the official one can..
The official USB network adapter is the only USB WiFi adapter that works on the 360. USB devices need drivers and there are none for the 360. MS of course keeps it this way so you buy the official one.
im only in the next room so i run a ethernet cable through the tv cable hole thats there and i run the wireless N through the wire but im moving to the basememt in a few months i would like to know if anyone has had any probs with it. i would really prefer not to cancel my live subsription yet.
You can't use any non-MS USB adapters on the 360 because they require drivers which you can't install. Alternatives to the MS Wireless Network Adapter are wireless bridges or gaming adapters that have a separate power supply and run through the ethernet port.
a tad late on this topic but any wired network port can be made wirless using a wifi network bridge see here to understand what it is I am talking about http://evdoinfo.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html All you do is plug the box into the network port on your console, power the box and it should go. It comes with software to pre configure it to your wifi networks specs like your network key on your wireless capable router.
