Im trying to get on xbox live with using an ethernet cord plugged into my xbox and my lap top. When I try to log on to xbox live it says i need an update and when I hit update it says cannot connect to xbox live but with my computer I disabled the windows firewall and got the windows media center from my laptop to appear on my tv so it is connected. Is there something else I am doing wrong? If it says xbox live needs to be updated than in someway it must be getting online. I also went to the support page on xbox live and look around and followed their intructions but that didn't work.

The only thing I can think of that you didn't put in your post (of the stuff you did) was go to your network devices and bridge the wireless adapter and the ethernet adapter. If you do that you should have no problem. I did that with mine and it worked like a charm!

Yo, the dude that posted above me is totally correct.

I also use my laptop to BRIDGE the wireless connection to my 360. Laptop and 360 are hooked up via ethernet cable. Saves me the added expense of Microsoft's ridiculously overpriced Wi-Fi adapter.

You'll see it under Network Settings. Select both your Wireless and Ethernet settings. Right click them. It will give you the option to BRIDGE CONNECTION. Select yes.

Voila! Success!

My friend and I have tried all that and still nothing. I know it can go on line though because just now I went over to his house and it went online with the internet cord plugged into the box. What else could be the problem?

Ok I just tried going online and I did log into Xbox using my lap top. When I logged in though it said I couldnt log into messenger and than something poped up saying some features of xbox live couldnt be used now but when they are available at the end it said status code 80072741 and also the market place icon didnt show up on my dashboard. When I put in left 4 dead 2 though and tried to update it did what it normally does and says it cannot connect. So does using the laptop is not as good as wifi or the actual cord frm the internet box?

i did this once and it completely messed up my laptop. connecting to the internet was messed up (when not plugged in to live). the windows wouldnt display properly and it was just very confusing trying to get things to work properly. i had to reset my laptop to factory condition and reinstall everything i had on my computer. awful experience. im glad i just bought the wireless adaptor.

I haven't used my laptop as a bridge before, but here is some information that might help.

Same, it acted completely normal, like I had plugged it straight into the wall or was using Microsoft's overpriced wifi product.

Thats so weird. Any thoughts as to why my xbox can't update with using the lap top?

You should check your DNS line manually in the xbox 360 ( the same as the PC). Everything else should be auto. You should probably check your transfer rate, if it breaks that means you need to figure out when the signal to the server is best or call your cable company.
