So does pretty much everyone use the mic online? Last night was my first time using Live and it seemed that everyone uses the headpeice to ramble on with. Anyway my real question is, is there something wrong with not using the mic? I just wanted to play some awesome Castle Crashers and try it out with some other people and then a bunch of girls or 13 year olds were cussing me out because I didn't use my mic?

I don't know I may be strange but I don't want to chatter when I'm gaming, unless it is with a group of people I know, and I would wrather just play. I'm just wondering if it's to be expected to always have the headpeice on when playing online.

Hehe me picking a level 1 character to play with their level 50-99 sure didn't reduce the ammount of cussing. =P

Depends on what game you're playing and how serious the people are about playing it. Like with both the Call of Duty's, if you're playing team deathmatch, no one really cares if you're on your mic, and alot of times there's no one in the game even using them. But if you're playing something strategic like bomb squad or CTF, it does help to have a mic so you can give directions and respond to your teammates. There's always going to be stupid people on their mics just rambling and yelling (or singing) for the hell of it. Thankfully there's always the mute feature.

Every game I join its ether those little 13 year olds screaming at you or its those people who try to act all gangsta because they think its cool or something. I just don't use my mic anymore. Only use it to talk to friends.

Ok I'm glad it's not just me having some bad luck or something. I deffinitally hit a couple group of 13 year old gangsters, it was a bit unsettling. Oh well, no matter, I'm still new to the 360 so I'm sure I will learn and get used to it, and enjoy a healthy dose of the mute button.

Thanks for reminding me about adding in my Gamertag, I had completely forgotten about bringing my sig up to snuff. Anyway add me if anyone is in the mood for some Castle Crashers or Too Human, yeah I'm one of the three people in the world who actually like the game. =P

If you play MLG on H3 and not use a mic, you will be hated upon. Severly.

strangers are just friends you dont know yet! I dont like no mics(you), but i equally dislike annoying little kids that scream in the mic, and immature adults throwing around racial slurs.

Ah the joys of online... Personally I have it on, but I keep quiet unless I have something to say. And people that swear at me I just leave their game... It takes a long time to find enough people that aren't losers to play online with... Thus one of the reasons I typically avoid it outright.

I use the mic when i feel like it, i just hate getting stuck with all these little kids that act immature, i play Halo 3 mostly cuz that's all i have right now so i get stuck with them alot if im not playing wiht some friends. I love it when i find a group of people who actually know how to use the mic, communicate like a team. It depends on my mood.

Wow...sentences, my friend. Sentences...

Anyways, by saying "u poor nub cant afford a mic huh" you're just making yourself look like an idiot. First off, most people get a headset WITH their 360s, and secondly, they're just not wearing it, mostly due to people like you.

I guess I should specify a bit further. When I mean playing with friends I usually mean having people over and playing split screen, not people I know online. Also, even though I generally do not like the mic, I do live with other people and at this point it was late at night and did not want to end up disturbing people.

Could anyone suggest any online games that seem to have a more mature audience? I honestly love Castle Crashers, but I am not liking the community I have seen what so ever.

Thanks for all of the great responses!

I lost mine so i'm going to rebuy one. I normally played TF2 and L4D. Both of them are great to use microphones on because a lot of people aren't too bad.

In team-oriented games, I think people will generally want you to use your mic. I play a lot of Team Fortress, and mic-ism is highly encouraged there. As for people screaming at you, apply the mute function liberally.

No kidding. When it comes to etiquettte on Xbox Live, as long as you're not an insufferable ass to every person you meet, you're doing fine.

This is true! There is nothing more annoying then playing team deathmatch and you get stuck with the individual who chooses not to use their mic! Except for the people who actually have a mic on and still refrain from assisting the rest of the team. They call it TEAM deathmatch for a reason.

I use the party system these days and only play team based games with a group of friends and that is what I recommend for any team-based game you play. It really puts your team at a disadvantage if some are not communicating and that isn't fair to the other players on your team. However, this is Xbox live and respect for your fellow gamer is a rarity and that is unfortunate indeed!

The bottom-line is....if you are compelled to go at it alone with no intentions of communicating, thats fine, but if you don't want to participate with your team, then play free for all, where you arent required to speak and work in conjunction with a team! :)

I've found there is a downside to party chat within games - they are usually left open for anyone to join, and so mid game you will get some random come in and decide to sing to wind up his friend, or someone on a recently played list jumps in. Also people in party chat don't communicate with the rest of the players in the game, so even though most people have a mic, you can't always communicate with the whole team

This is why I usually set my party to invite only to ensure that doesn't happen. ;) Though avenger had a point about people being in party chat and here again, that still applies. If you don't plan on communicating with the rest of your team, then perhaps you should switch to game chat or play a game type that isn't team based. It really is hindering your team if you are unwilling to communicate. :)

No, no dude. I don't use my headset unless I'm talking with friends. Hey I do have a life-saving tip for you though - When not using the headset, do this:

1.) Hit the Xbox Guide Button

2.) Scroll all the way to the right to "preferences"

3.) Go to "Voice" and turn volume to zero.

What this does is it makes for a COMPLETELY silent voice system. You won't hear them out of the mic, or out of the TV - even if the mic is unplugged. So yeah, try that and you won't hear them cussing. Oh, and if you choose to hear again, go back and repeat the process, but this time turning it up to volume ten.

There are certain games where a mic is needed.
L4D, TF2, etc.

And, others where it doesn't really matter.
Gears, CoD, Halo, etc.

I don't play Castle Crashers, but I'm guessing from what I've seen, they have small rooms.
This is probably why you have people getting mad at you.

If you don't want to wear it, though.
Don't.

A lot of people don't.
Most game lobbies I see, a 2/3 people aren't wearing mics.
Or, they're in a party, which is pretty much the same thing.

You just have to selectively choose which game to wear a mic in, if you really care what the others you're playing with think.
If hearing what needs to be done is needed, wear a mic. If it's just mindless killing, stick it on the table, and play.

Yeah, same thing happened to me... I only use my mic with my friends, or when in a party. I don't think much people still use the mic though, at least that's what I heard. If someone really is cussing you, just ignore them. Oh, and if you have the time/chance report them all as 'bad' players via file complaint

I have really wanted to play L4D and I know my neighbor would die to play that game, her brother gave it to her for PC but her laptop can't run it, so you are saying that this is a game with a good community? Valve puts out some stellar games and I really think I wouldn't mind using the mic in this sort of game, it's basically 4 people against hordes of the undead yes? I know I know I should do my own research on it but it is one of those that had slipped under my radar.

No; there's absolutely nothing wrong with not using your mic all the time. I only use my mic when playing with friends or playing a tactical team-basedmultiplayer game. I suppose when playing a game like Castle Crashers, having a mic in when playing with strangers/anyone at all would be somewhat beneficial to the gameplay/experience, but it's not entirely necessary. It's how you want to play the game that matters.

Sometimes people boot others without a mic from games because they think mic= teamwork, but they're wrong, only seen good teams with lots of voice chat in rainbow six vegas and team fortress 2, and sometimes Halo 3.

Usually play with people I know, and do use the mic either to chat a bit or gameplay chat(location of enemies, need help, etc...) - do sometimes avoid people who dont have mics especially in games like Rainbow Six Vegas 2. But then again will avoid a room full of squeeky voices talking non stop.

If you go to Xbox.com, you can change your privacy settings. I can't stand the racial slurs, sexual comments, and other crude conversations I hear, so mine is set so I can only hear my friends and the only people who can hear me are friends. Seriously though, in team deathmatch, headphones aren't necessary. Stick with the team and don't go running off my yourself.

I plan on only using mine for Left 4 Dead and Halo 3. Other than that, I could deal without the little brats.
