I watch DVDs on my 3360 all the time. the cool thing is that you can have a seriously scratched up DVD, and it can still play it. but the primary way of getting the RROD is not keeping it well ventilated.

This ^. I use it as my primary dvd player and think it's great. It will have no baring on possible hardware malfunction. If anything i expect your xbox would be running cooler whilst playing a dvd movie than a game, as it would have less intensive activity.

I watch hours of movies on my 360. Ventilation or not a 360 will eventually die. They are faulty products.

I've run out of inputs on my TV with my surround sound system, 360 and a few other peripherals so I had moved the DVD player that was attached into the bedroom. Which leaves me with watching movies on my 360. I enjoy the audio/video quality as I basically up-converted from my DVD player. Haven't had mine all that long so I can't determine much as far as RROD goes. But personally I keep it well ventilated as it has it's own shelf and I clean/dust the unit rather frequently to try to keep dust/dirt from getting inside the console. I figure that if it ever does RROD on me then at least I can feel that I did everything I could to prevent it and it wasn't my fault. Still praying that it doesn't!

yes, i use it sometimes. the only reason for getting the red ring is by the 360 overheating.

Yeah, I do. It has better upscalling capabilities than the PS3 or the DVD player in my house. So I use my 360 to watch DVDs in my room.

The 360 doesn't upscale, it just does 480P progressive scan. It makes an excellent DVD player, I just have to log off Xbox LIve because the little messages annoy me while watching a movie. It kind of kills a really intense moment if someone like "420Fartspray" logs on. It does play some damaged DVDs well that other DVD players have had trouble with. I have a Sony upconverting DVD player on my plasma upstairs. I have compared the two, and on a good quality movie there isn't that much difference. I think you already have your answer on the RROD. Your 360 is not PROCESSING as much information while watching a DVD, so it will run much cooler. Ventilation is the key, especially while gaming.

On another note, the Blu-ray on PS3 or any other Blu-ray player when playing a Blu-ray DVD is far superior. But that should be a no-brainer. You have more pixels to begin with on a Blu-ray DVD.

Actually it uses more like 4x the amount of power. But yeah you should get a cheap dvd player instead of using your xbox because it's just more time being spent with the thing heating up and from what people have said may be the cause for RRoD.
