Why is it that this game got cancelled so far into production?

It was the original Fallout 3 game. But it was cancelled when about 95% of the game engine was already fnished.
Black Isle closed before they could launch the game, they sold the rights to the game to Bethesda and Bethesda decided they didn't want to use the Black Isles' code and completely remade the game using the Oblivion engine. Fallout 3 was my favorite game of '08 so I think it worked out for the best.
I'm with LOSTxHEROES on this one. Black Isle made Fallout 1 and 2 what it was back in the day, but this evolution by Bethesda is a whole other beast and is an extraordinary blend of RPG and FPS. Besides... Black Isle Studios has really nothing else to offer and it is better that the more experienced talent gets picked up by bigger developers to stem the tide of crap games being released.Black Isle closed before they could launch the game, they sold the rights to the game to Bethesda and Bethesda decided they didn't want to use the Black Isles' code and completely remade the game using the Oblivion engine. Sadly, Black Isle died and it was put in limbo. I hate them for that. Fallout 3 has nothing on what Van Buren would have been. I still play the first three Fallouts from time to time. Much better than Fallout 3.
