I haven't been able to use it vertical without it destroying the disk, i've lost two trying it.

Weird, mine has been in both positions, no problems so far. And i've had the thing for over a year.

Keep in mind that different dvd drives are used by Microsoft. So that'll probably be the cause of this all.
@ Guiltfeeder566 -> Why not send it back? Get a brand new one, and maybemaybe some money back on the destroyed disks?
Ive had mine since launch and ive had it in both positions for over a year and nothing bad has happened.
My personal theory on the matter is: If your 360 is in a place that it can easily be tipped over, then horizontal it is, but I personally like having mine standing up. Really, if you are just really careful with it, and baby it then you shouldn't have any problems.

That shuold be for the xbox 720
i wonder if there would even be a diagonal position when the 720 comes out in 4-5 yearsMy system is kept vertical.
Vertical -
1. MUCH better ventilation - motherboard-side stays cooler (leave it on for 45 mins in both positions and see for yourself)
2. Low chance of disc scratching (needs to be positioned in a secure area. My console is on it's own away from my desk where it cannot be moved)
Horizontal -
1. Gets uncomfortably hot on the motherboard-side. (Internals must be scorching - may not apply to the 'Falcon' model)
2. No real chance of accidental disc scratchingGregoroth
My elite is vertical because of space issues, I heard the 360 draws in cool air from the bottom vent. Am I blocking the air flow in the vertical position?
*My friend has a funny setup, he puts 3 dvd cases under his 360 in the horizontal position. So no disc scratches and better ventilation I guess since its not sitting on its side and building up heat*
Whoever says vertical is better for ventilation is dumb. Think abou it. Have you ever noticed the side that becomes the BOTTOM when its vertical is the main air intake. The back's the output and the side/bottom is the intake. Does pointing that towards the ground really seem smart for ventilation. Not particularly. I keep mine horizontal for that reasona nd it jsut seems safer (less likely to fall).dawgsfan1447
Thats your opinion, nothing wrong with others thinking vertical is better.
^...but they did release a console that has a 'fundamental' (read: inadequate cooling system) design flaw. To me, there is a big difference that does depend on what position you place it in.
I personally, would not keep the system running horizontal for much longer than a few hours and that's just sitting at the dashboard.Gregoroth
My hat is off to you my friend, I didnt think someone would bring logical thinking into this.

Maybe my opinion that horizontal is better, but not that it's better for airflow. That's just a fact. It may not be deadly for the intake vent to be pointing down since it has the feet, but it can certainly get air more easily if its pointing into the open. That's common sense.^...but they did release a console that has a 'fundamental' (read: inadequate cooling system) design flaw. Yeah its sad, everything else about the 360 is great. Definitely prefer it over my PS3. If the 360 had the same hardware reliability the PS3 and Wii wouldn't stand a chance IMO.

Have you even noticed that hot air rises? Have you ever noticed that the top of the Xbox when it's horizontal is solid plastic? Have you ever noticed that the top of the Xbox when it's vertical is ventilated? Have you ever noticed that you sound like a jerk when you call people dumb?
